202 | Harry M. Wieder, 94, formerly of Landisville, Lancaster Co, entered in to eternal rest at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 18, 2003, at the Mennonite Ho me, Lancaster, where he lived since March. He was born Sept. 21, 1909 in Synder Co, a sone of the late Howard M . and Sarah (Snook) Wieder. He and the former Mary Faith Barner wer e married Oct. 21, 1934. She preceded him in death on Feb. 3, 2001. He was educated at the Ridge Grammar School house in Synder County. Mr. Wieder retired from the Hempfield School District May 18, 1979, wh ere he was employed as a custodial for 18½ years. He was previously e gaged in farming for more than 20 years in the Landisville area. Mr. Wieder was a member of Grace Evangelical Congregational Church, Ea st Petersburg, and its senior choir, was an usher, and assistant to th e treasurer for many years. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather wh o genuinely enjoyed his home and yard work. Surviving, one son and daughter-in-law, Clarence M. and Karen Wieder o f Leola; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda E. and James R. Clark o f York and Janet L. and Richard E. Neville of Denver, PA; seven grandc hildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law, J ohn H. and Dorothea Wieder of Phoenixville and Richard O. and Grace Wi eder of Lowman, NY; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Savannah and Wils on Bell of Horseheads, NY, and Betty and Leroy Goss of Milroy; and thr ee generations of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by six sisters, Hilda M. Hartman, Carrie J. S melzer, May K. McNitt, Ruth Bickhart, Gertrude Kline and Sarah E. Suni ega. Barner, 90, of 3585 Crossroads Drive, passed awa y on Saturday, April 9, 2011, at RiverWoods, Lewisburg. She was born Nov. 28, 1920, in New Columbia, a daughter of the late Ha y T. and Laura A. (Stark) Baumer. On Jan. 2, 1942, she married Ear l B. Barner who preceded her in death on Sept. 4, 2003, after 61 year s of marriage. A member of St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church, Milton, Hazel taugh t Sunday school for over 20 years and was a member of the Jolly Girl s Sunday school class. She was a member of the former Chapter 7, Easte Star, Milton. In her spare time she was a volunteer room mother in the Lewisburg pub lic schools. Hazel also enjoyed growing flowers. Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Ronald B. and Jill Barner o f Manchester, Md.; one daughter, Judy A. Berkheimer of Danville; one b other, Robert D. Baumer of Yankton, S.D.; four grandchildren; and eig ht great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents she was predeceased by one daug hter, Connie L. Byers in 1994, five brothers, George, Harry, Budd, Ken eth and Joseph Baumer, and three sisters, Mabel Baumer, Helen Weise and Cora Danowsky. Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Church Hill Cemetery, Lewisburg. Born July 23, 1923 in Antes Fort, Henry was the son of Henry W. Sr. an d Lydia Kreitz Hauser. Colleen was born March 31, 1928 in Red Lion, and was the daughter of R . Bruce and Blanche Viola Flaharty Poet. They were both members of the St. John Evangelical Church. Henry was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and served with the 5th Inf antry 50th Field artillery unit in campaigns in Normandy, Ardennes For est, France, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was awarded the Silver S tar as a radio operator with the Forward Observation party in the Batt le of the Bulge and later a Bronze Star. He reitred from Alcan Cable in 1985, where he was awarded a patent fo a cable-coating extruder head system. He once owned and operated Hau ser TV Cable that served the Antes Fort, Salladasburg and Cogan Hous e areas. He served as Nippenose Twp Supervisor for 30 years and also served a s superintendent of the Antes Fort Village Park, home of the Henry W . Hauser Jr. Softball Complex, named in his honor. "Orie" Herlocher Sr., 82, longtime resident of the Loganto area went peacefully to be with the Lord on Jan. 4, 2010 at Manor Ca e, Jersey Shore, surrounded by his loving family. Horace retired from Avco Lycoming Motors in 1987, and was well known f or his post retirement service at Schrack's Valley Service in Loganto until 2006. He was a U.S. Army Veteran who served honorably during WWII in the Sou th Pacific. Horace was a proud member of the N.R.A., an avid hunter and a lover o f outdoors activities and his family. He enjoyed woodworking and socializing with his friends. Horace served as Green Twp Zoning Officer for several years during pos t retirement. Born Jan. 28, 1927 in Milan, Mich., he was the son of the late Harve y Quigg and Elizabeth (Alford) Herlocher. Along with his parents he was predeceased by all of his brothers and s isters. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Elwood and sister Rhea. She is survived by her loving husband of 22 years, Carl E. Young of Bethany Village; 4 step daughters, Mary Lois Miller of Cabot, PA, Margaret Carol Wray of Durham, NC, Ruth Elizabeth McGuire of Vienna, Austria, and Kathryn Young Carmines of New Cumberland; niece, Linda Brenneman of Carlisle and nephew, Floyd Hutchinson of FL. Martha was a member of Camp Hill United Methodist Church. She was a graduate of Christian Education and Kindergarten teaching from the Lucy Web Hyes United Methodist Training School of Washington, DC. After college, she served a term in a Methodist Mission teaching kindergarten. Following that, she took care of her mother and then father and then got a temporary job at Beneficial Finance. The temporary job lasted 35 years. She also served as a volunteer director of children's work at Pine Street United Methodist Church of Williamsport, PA. In her active years at Bethany Village, she served as volunteer treasurer of the Residents' Council and of the annual Village Fair. She also spent many hours visiting bedfast patients in Skilled Nursing. She enjoyed flower gardening and making bouquets for the Bethany Village esidents. She was soft spoken, gentle and a great listener. Martha loved to travel and was a great traveling companion. She was the beloved wife of the late John J. Cunnane Jr., whom she mar ied in 1944 at Bolling Air Force Base in Washington, D.C. Born in Beech Creek, Ida was one of the 15 children of the late Willia m and Eva Mayes Haagen, and mother of the late John Michael Cunnane an d Peter Christopher Cunnane. Mrs. Cunnane proudly served as a Red Cross volunteer during World Wa II in Washington, D.C., and then again during the 1980s in Okeechobe e, Fla. Ida was a long- time manager of the bookstore at Temple Univer sity's Ambler Campus. She was also very active for the Democratic Part y in Horsham for many years. Ida was an avid traveler who enjoyed touring the world. She has bee a "snow bird" for the last 25 years, having traveled from Beech Cree k for summers and Okeechobee, Fla., for the winters. Ida also enjoyed gardening, flowers, hummingbirds, and also quilting . She was an accomplished quilter, who created over 30 quilts in the l ast 20 years. Her constant and faithful companion for the past 20 years was Lady Di , a Bichon Frise, who will now live with her grandson. Her greatest enjoyment in life was that she enjoyed raising her own fa mily and also helped to raise the Sigmund children. She will be sorel y missed as a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister an d friend. Jack was a specia l man whose true passion was dedicating himself and his life to his fa mily. He was a devoted and loving husband to his wife of 43 years, Ju dith Sleeman Barner. His children, Jodell Barner and Jason Barner, we e the pride and joy of his life. Also surviving are his "favorite da ughter-in-law" Michele Nuhfer Barner and his two grandchildren that h e adored, Alaina & Curtis Barner. Jack V. Barner was an avid and resp ected outdoorsman and sportsman. He loved all sports, but his true fa vorite was football. Jack was an all-star football player in his da y and he especially loved watching the Kane Wolves play under the lead ership of his son, Jason. Jack V. Barner, 67, of 26 VanEttan Avenue, Sheffield, died Sunday, Aug ust 2, 2009, at Warren General Hospital. Born August 20, 1941, in Kane, he was a son of Cecil and Harriet Porte Barner. On October 9, 1965, in Clarendon, he married Judith Sleema who survives. Mr. Barner served in the Navy during the Vietnam Era. He was an engineer in the boiler plant at Warren State Hospital. He b elonged to the Sheffield VFW Color Honor Guard and was a lifelong memb er of the Sheffield Sports Boosters. He also belonged to the Kane Fish and Game Club, the Kalbfus Rod and G un Club, the Sheffield Rod and Gun Club and was a member of the Americ an Legion in Sheffield. 247 | James E. McCauley June 17, 2011 The Express Save | James E. McCauley James E. McCauley, 80, of 406 Big Plum Run Road, Lock Haven, died Thur sday, June 16, 2011 at Williamsport Hosptial. He was born on May 30, 1931 in Mackeyville, the son of the late Lee an d Bessie Barner McCauley, Sr. On Dec. 25, 1950, he married the former Betty M. Bower who survives i Lock Haven. James served in the Army for the 101st Airborne during the Korean War. He was employed by Piper Aircraft and then by Brodart until his retire ment in 1994. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Kenneth J. McCaule y (Deb) of Lock Haven; a daughter, Selena A. Weaver (Dennis) of Lock H aven; three grandchildren, Rachel Kenyon (John), Michael (Rachel) an d Daniel McCauley; and four great-grandchildren, Mercedes Kenyon, Owe Kenyon, Paige Kenyon and Zane McCauley. A funeral will be held on Monday, June 20, 2011 at 11 a.m. at the Dona ld G. Walker Funeral Home, Inc., 231 High St., Flemington, with Lay Mi ister Robert Mann officiating. 248 | James J. "Jay" Rhoads, 76, died Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010, at UPMC Northwest Hospital following a long illness. Mr. Rhoads was a 1951 graduate of Franklin High School. Following high school he served two years in the U.S. Army, then went on to Clarion University on the GI Bill, earning a bachelor of science degree in elementary education. He taught elementary school in Franklin for 34 years. For many years he was the director of the City of Franklin's Summer Playground program, and he and his brother Curtis "Dusty" Rhoads also coached a Franklin Little League team. Mr. Rhoads is survived by his wife Barbara of Franklin; three daughters, Jaye Schreier, M.D., and her husband John of Chicago, Ill., Susi Lyons and her husband Tim, and Cindy Cochran and her husband Joe, all of Franklin; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Goldie and Warren Rhoads; a brother, Curtis "Dusty" Rhoads; and one infant son, all from Franklin. 249 | James R. Barner May 28, 1937 - October 23, 2009 New Paltz, NY James R. (Jim) Barner, of Barner Books, New Paltz, NY, passed away Fri day, October 23, 2009 after a long illness. Jim, born in Ogallala, NE on May 28, 1937, left there to attend colleg e in Wyoming and Mexico. His love of travel and adventure took him t o live in Alaska, San Francisco, Buenos Aires, PA, Nova Scotia and Ne w York City. Jim wrote a book, "Bus to Buenos Aires," about his trip w ith his wife, Alice, overland from San Francisco to Buenos Aires in 19 67-68. He also wrote numerous travel articles and short stories. For s ome years he was active in public relations with Carl Byoir and Assoc . in NYC, and for some years he ran a sheep farm and hand-weaving stud io in Nova Scotia. In 1990 Jim moved to New Paltz, NY where he settled. He spent some o f his happiest times there, fulfilling a long dream of having a bookst ore. It became a gathering place for lovers of books, who enjoyed Jim's com pany and wit, and his constant companion, Harry the dog. Jim is survived by his loving daughter, Elizabeth Barner of Leicester , England; his wife, Alice of NYC; and many friends. A memorial party and informal service will be held at 36 Main, 36 Mai St., New Paltz on Saturday, November 7, from 1-4 p.m., a service wil l take place at 2 p.m., share a memory if you wish.
