Youth Dies From Results Of Fight
Terry L. Barner, a 17-year-old Moscow High School senior, died this mo
ing at Sacred Heart Hospital, Spokane, from critical head injuries r
eceived as a result of a fight last Saturday at Liberty Lake, Wash.
Barner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Barner, had not regained consciousn
ess after being struck by a 21-year-old Spokane man with a piece o
f 2 by 4 lumber near a dance hall.
Spokane Prosecution Attorney George Paine said today no decision wil
l be made relative to any court action until an investigation is compl
eted.
Paine called today for additional witnesses to the altercation. Witnes
ses will be re-interviewed for the next three or four days.
Three Moscow boys and two girls had accompanied Barner including Gar
y Berg, John Hall, Denny Music, Tammy Mallory and Lola Cosner.
The Moscow youths yesterday talked to the prosecuting attorney at Spok
ane.
The 21-year-old Spokane man has reported for a lie-detector test tha
t he swung at Barner in self-defence after being attacked by about fiv
e youths, all reportedly from Moscow, after he had scuffled with one o
f them early in the evening.
At Moscow High School, Barner participated in football where he wa
s a fullback. He was also a member of the M-Club.
Surviving, besides the parents, are two brothers, Tony and Toby, a sis
ter, Tracy and two grandfathers, Leonard Alen Purser and Lester Barne
of Walla Walla.
Funeral arrangements are pending. Shorts Chapel in charge.
