Jean C. Row of Dover died Thursday August 2 1,2008 in her home. She wa
s 85.
Jean Row was born April 15, 1P23 in Shippensburg, PA to the late Joh
E. Coffey and Kathryn
Fogelsanger Coffey. She graduated from Shippensburg High School in 194
0 and earned her B.S. in Education
Degree at Shippensburg State Teachers College now Shippensburg Univers
ity, in 1 943, having taken an
accelerated program because of WWII. From 1943 to 1949 she was a teach
er in the public schools at Mount
Union, PA.
On May 21, 1944 Jean and Howard E. Row of Millersburg, PA were marrie
d at Grace Refonned Church now
known as U.C.C in Shippensburg. They moved to Dover February 1953. Jea
has been a teacher in Sunday
schools, a director at Church activities, a leader in Girl Scouts an
d coordinator of a recreational prograrrl for
children of migrants. At St. Andrews Evangelical Lutheran Church in Do
ver she was Luther League Advisor in
the 1960's and historian for its first 32 years. She compiled an exten
sive genealogical record of the Coffey.
Fogelsanger, Row, and Elicker families and wrote historical accounts o
f individual members which are available
for research at the appropriate historical society libraies. Jean wa
s a guide for Dover Heritage Trail, Inc. from
1980 to 1992 and tour director from 1985 to 1992. She researched and w
ote a guidebook for the Victorian Dover
Historic District and researched and expended the guidebook for the Ol
d Dover Historic District. Jean donated
photo portraits of Sara Wistar Miller to the Leon DeValinger Hall of R
ecords. These were hung near the vault
where the charter documents from Charles arid James Duke of York are p
eserved. The documents were gifts for
the State of Delaware from Sarah Wistar Miller in 1909.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Howard C. Row of Dovcr; t
wo sons, Dovid A. Row nnd his wife
Mary of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and John H. Row ; granddaughters
, Julie R, Row Ingram and
Debbie Row Whately and her husband Shane; great grandchildren, Aspen
, Nickolas, Katie Whatley and Grant
T.J. Ingram.
Services will be private.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to St. An
drews Lutheran Church, 425 N. Dupont
Highway, Dover, DE 19901 and gifts designated to be used for maintaini
g historical records.
