Charles E. Mowen Sr., 85, of Trovinger Mill Road, Hagerstown, Md., pas
sed away Friday, Dec. 31, 2010, at his home, surrounded by his lovin
g family.
Born May 19, 1926 in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Daniel Her
man and Ethel (Provard) Mowen.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving on th
e USS Sakonnet.
He was employed by the U.S. government for 42 years, retiring in 198
6 as postmaster of the Franklin Street Hagerstown post office. Prior t
o becoming postmaster, he was a U.S postal inspector.
He was a member of the Chewsville United Methodist Church; The Salvati
on Army, serving on the advisory board and past chairman; Masonic Orde
32nd Degree Mason Friendship Lodge 84 A.F. & A.M.; Queen Esther Chap
ter 3 Order of the Eastern Star; past president of the Hagerstown Shri
ers Club; National Association of Federal Employees; Hagerstown Elk
s Lodge 378, serving on numerous committees; Waynesboro Eagles Inc.; M
orris Frock American Legion Post 42, where he was an officer for a num
ber of years and a member of the honor guard; Last Man’s Club, where h
e was a lifetime secretary; and the Audubon Society.
He was an avid bird watcher.
He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Mary Amelia Zamboni Mowen, who
m he married Jan. 2, 1986; son, Charles E. Mowen Jr. of Winnsboro, S.C
.; daughter, Pamela and husband Dr. James Moulsdale of Fallston, Md.
, and daughter, Melissa Eller and husband Shane of Raleigh, N.C.; step
daughter, Lori Palmer and husband Steve of Wolfsville, Md.; sister, Be
tty Mowen Smith of Hagerstown; three grandchildren, five great-grandch
ildren, six step-grandchildren, and seven great-step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Olive Virginia Fisher Mowe
; brother, Ira McKinley (Mick) Mowen; and stepson, William S. Gutteri
dge.
There will be no viewing.
Services and burial will be private and at the convenience of the fami
ly.
