The Rev. Fern T. Barner, S.T.D., of Greensburg, passed away Thursday
, April 16, 1998. He was born April 14, 1912, a son of the late Henr
y Edward and Priscilla Elizabeth Uplinger Barner. He attended Shenando
ah College, Dayton, Va., Lock Haven University, receiving the two-yea
teaching certificate in 1938. He received his B.A. from St. Franci
s College in 1945 and a doctorate in Sacred Theology (STD) from the Th
eological Seminary of Clarksville, Tenn., in 1967. He was preceded i
death by his wife of 53 years, Naomi (Herrold) Barner; an infant dau
ghter, Mary Catherine; and his parents; also five brothers, Emery, Cha
les, Russell, Lester and Carl; and a sister, Mrs. Vern Moyer. He is s
urvived by two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Carol Barner of Bl
air, Neb., and Daniel and Jacquie Barner of Newport News, Va.; two gra
ddaughters, Michele (Barner) Clausen and Jessica (Barner) May; two gr
andsons, Timothy and Peter Barner; two great-granddaughters; and thre
e great-grandsons. Also surviving are two sisters, Stella Ferster of S
outh Carolina and Margaret Furman of Arizona; a brother, Earl of Lewis
burg, Pa.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Dr. Barner serve
d in the following churches during his 45 years of ministry: Waukesha
, Wilmore, Altoona Third Church, South Fork First Church, Philipsbur
g First Church, Paradis/Bridgeport and South Greensburg, from which h
e retired on June 15, 1978. Memorial contributions may be made to th
e Barner Memorial Fund of the South Greensburg United Methodist Church
, Sheridan Avenue and Elm Street, South Greensburg, Pa. 15601. Famil
y and friends will be received Sunday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. in t
he KEPPLE-GRAFT FUNERAL HOME, 524 N. Main St., Greensburg. Services Mo
day at 1 p.m. in the South Greensburg United Methodist Church. Interm
ent will follow in the St. Clair Cemetery.
