Russell S. "Lum" Lupold, 91, of R. D., New Columbia, passed away unexpectedly Friday, October 23, 2009, at home.
Born June 17, 1918, on the Barner homestead one mile east of Carroll, he was a son of the late Harvey C. and Carrie Mae (Barner) Lupold.
On October 13, 1945, Russell married the former Dorothy H. Frederick at the Methodist Church in Montgomery. Dorothy preceded him in death on June 19, 1996 after 50 years of marriage.
In 1939 Russell served in the Pennsylvania National Guard 109th Regiment, 28th Division, located in Milton. He was inducted into the regular Army in January 1942 at Indiantown Gap and was stationed at Fayetteville, NC for training. Russell was returning to Indiantown Gap on December 7, 1941, when he heard about the attack on Pearl Harbor. Following assignments at Camp Livingston, LA, Camp Carabelle, FL, Camp Pickett, VA, and Camp Miles Standish, MA, he left for Bristol, England in October 1943. Russell landed at Omaha Beach on June 16, 1944, crossed into Germany at Luxenberg and was wounded September 14, 1944. He was hospitalized in England until December 24, 1944 and returned to New York on January 4, 1945 for further hospitalization. On June 24, 1945, after serving 6 years and 19 days, he was discharged at Camp Pickett, VA.
For 11 years Russell worked at the Turbotville Block Plant before taking a job as a mechanic at Susquehanna Motors. As a self-taught mechanic, he worked his way into the position of Service Manager and retired in 1984 after 26 years. Even after retirement he continued to maintain a schedule as though he was still working, eating his meals and performing work duties, and only just recently gave up his PA State Inspection license. He enjoyed special times spent with his family, particularly at the family cabin near Carroll.
Russell was a member of the Watsontown United Methodist Church. He was a life member of the Clyde F. Mowrer Post 323 American Legion, Watsontown, and the Milton Fire Department. In addition, he was a 50-year member of the Watsontown Masonic Lodge 401 and a member of the Williamsport Consistory.
