    Vernon K. Shaffer, 85, of Muhlenberg Twp, died Jan. 17, 2008 at 12:2
    0 a.m. in the Phoebe-Berks Healthcare Center, where he had resided since June 26, 2007.

    He was the husband of the late Gladys V. (Houp) Shaffer, who died March 22, 1993.

    Born in Loganton, he was a son of the late Glenn C. and Kathryn (Klecker) Shaffer.

    He was a Berks County Commissioner for 24 years. He held the longest service record of any county commissioner in PA.

    He was a captain in the U.S. Air Force and a veteran of World War II.

    He was a member of One United Church of Christ, Kenhorst. He was a former Elder of Good Shepherd U.C.C. - Tuckerton, past president of the PA Game Commission and a member of Locust Ridge Hunting Camp, Clinton County. He was very active in the Republican Party and was campaign manager for Raymond Shafer in his bid for governor of PA. He was a pioneer in the development of the Berks County Parks System and assisted i the moving of the Gruber Wagon Works. He was a former member of the Muhlenberg Rotary Club and a former 32nd degree Mason and Shriner. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and conservationist. He also held his instructor’s pilot license and operated Shaffer’s Ariel Advertising, attended University of Wisconsin and was a secretary of the Muhlenbeg Twp Authority.

    He is survived by a daughter, the Rev. Cheryl L. Moore of Shillington; a son, Ron V. (Judy) Shaffer of West Reading; a brother, Duane Shaffer of Clinton County; and two grandsons, Aaron I. Moore and Seth A. Moore. He was predeceased by a brother, Charles Shaffer. He is also survived by a companion, Ingrid Breitenstein of Muhlenberg Twp.

    Funeral services will be Saturday, Jan. 26, 2008 at 10 a.m. at One United Church of Christ, 1730 New Holland Rd., Kenhorst, with the Rev. Pamela C. Fischer officiating. Interment with military honors will be i Berks County Memorial Gardens, Maidencreek Twp. Viewing will be Friday, Jan. 25, 2008 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Klee Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 1 East Lancaster Ave., Shillington, and Saturday from 9 to 10 a.m. at the church.
