Lloyd Monroe Swartz
MOUNT LEBANON - Lloyd Monroe Swartz, 92, of Mount Lebanon, died on Mon
day, March 10, 2008.
He was born on May 6, 1915, near Millerstown. He was a son of the lat
e Banks Leister and Dora (Barner) Swartz. On July 17, 1941, he was mar
ied to the former Leslie Wheat Minor, who preceded him in death on Ju
ly 23, 2004.
Mr. Swartz grew up on the family farm near Millerstown.
In 1930, he graduated from Newport High School, and, in 1934, he gradu
ated from Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, with a Bachelor of Ar
ts degree in mathematics. Later, he graduated from Bucknell Universit
y in Lewisburg in 1937, with a Master of Arts in mathematics
Mr. Swartz taught science and mathematics at Liverpool High School fro
m 1935 to 1941. He, then, taught mathematics at Bucknell University fr
om 1945 to 1955, and he retired as a nuclear engineer for Westinghouse
, Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory at West Mifflin in 1981, having serve
d in this capacity since 1955.
He was a former member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Lewisburg
, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Mount Lebanon and the Holy Trinity Epis
copal Church in Dormont.
He and his late wife shared an avid interest in family history. Mr. Sw
artz also enjoyed photography.
Surviving are: three children, a son and a daughter-in-law, Lloyd Mino
Swartz and his wife, Carol, of Boerne Texas, two daughters and a son
-in-law, Eleanor S. Sharp and husband, David R., of Murrysville, and M
argaret S. Hynes and husband, Paul, of Lyman, Wyo.; two brothers and s
isters-in-law, Barner S. Swartz, Wilma Jean and G. Byron Swartz and Jo
y, all of Millerstown; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Ruth Swartz a
d Lawrence Cauffman, of Richfield, and Shirley Sheaffer, of Mount Ple
asant Mills; a sister-in-law, Miriam Swartz, of Richfield; eight grand
children; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Swartz was preceded in death by a brother, M. Stanley Swartz, an
d by two brothers-in-law, Harvey Swartz and Kenneth Sheaffer.
The family will receive friends for the viewing at 9:30 a.m. Saturday
, March 15, until the casket is closed at 10:30 a.m. A visitation wil
l then continue until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. The v
iewing, visitation and services will be held in Faith Lutheran Churc
h in Richfield, with the Rev. Timothy W. Bingman officiating. Burial w
ill be made in the adjoining church cemetery.
