William Howard Bull, CLU, Died on Monday, February 10th, at the age o
f 97. Howard spent his childhood in Upton, Massachusetts. Working hi
s way through school, he graduated from Bates College, Lewiston, Maine
, in 1929; he soon earned his Chartered Life Underwriters designation.
In 1932 he married Louise Elizabeth Wilt of Franklin, PA., a union tha
t lasted until his wife's death in l994.
Howard spent his working life with the Aetna Life Insurance Company; h
e served at offices in the East and the Midwest and was appointed Empl
oyee Benefits Division Manager at Indianapolis in l943, retiring fro
m that position in 1971 and continuing to work for the Aetna in the Li
fe Division until his full retirement in 1981. Howard was Past Preside
t of the Indianapolis chapter of Life Underwriters and of the Indiana
polis Accident and Health Underwriters Association. Howard chaired th
e insurance industry's Committee on Indiana Group Insurance Legislatio
in l953, the year in which the model Group Life and Group Sickness a
d Accident bills were passed.
Howard excelled in sports, in particular tennis, golf , swimming and d
iving, and was an avid amateur photographer.
He was co-founder and Past President of the Hoosier Bates Club and a
honorary member of the Bates College Club. Since l944, Howard and hi
s family were members of the Riviera Club; other memberships include
d the Indianapolis Athletic Club, Matinee Musicale, and the Contempora
y Club. He was Past President of Kiwanis Club North, where he had 3
4 years of perfect attendance. He later transferred membership to th
e Kiwanis Club of Meridian Hills and was inducted into the Legion of H
onor by virtue of fifty years of membership in the organization. Howar
d was a member of North United Methodist Church since 1944; his memori
al service will be held there this Sunday at two p.m., followed by a r
eception and visitation in the church parlor.
Memorial contributions may be made to North ME Church, the Bates Colle
ge Annual Fund, Kiwanis International Foundation, or a favorite charit
y.
Howard is survived by a daughter, Mary Eleanor Quint of Milwaukee, WI
; son William Howard Bull, Jr. and wife Karen Miller Bull of Lexington
, KY; three grandsons - Christopher Quint, Jeremy Quint, and Jonatha
Miller Bull; two granddaughters - Meredith Bull Buhalis and Jennife
Bull Woods; and one great-grandson, Adam Anderson.
His family is pleased that Howard could be a donor of both bone and fa
scia tissue. Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Upton, Massachuse
