James J. "Jay" Rhoads, 76, died Saturday,
Feb. 20, 2010, at UPMC Northwest
Hospital following a long illness. Mr.
Rhoads was a 1951 graduate of Franklin
High School. Following high school he
served two years in the U.S. Army, then
went on to Clarion University on the GI
Bill, earning a bachelor of science degree
in elementary education. He taught elementary
school in Franklin for 34 years.
For many years he was the director of the
City of Franklin's Summer Playground
program, and he and his brother Curtis
"Dusty" Rhoads also coached a Franklin
Little League team. Mr. Rhoads is survived
by his wife Barbara of Franklin;
three daughters, Jaye Schreier, M.D., and
her husband John of Chicago, Ill., Susi
Lyons and her husband Tim, and Cindy
Cochran and her husband Joe, all of
Franklin; and five grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by his mother and father,
Goldie and Warren Rhoads; a
brother, Curtis "Dusty" Rhoads; and one
infant son, all from Franklin. Funeral
services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday
in the Christ United Methodist
Church, Franklin. Interment will follow
in the Franklin Cemetery.
