Esther S. Krape Barner Mathewson May 28, 1918 - September 17, 2011 Esther S. Krape Barner Mathewson, 93, of Riverview Manor in Lewisburg, fomerly of Aaronsburg, passed from this life on Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011, at Riverwoods Nursing Home in Lewisburg. Esther, a daughter of the late John Fiedler Krape and Mamie Esther Crouse Krape, was born May 28, 1918, in Aaronsburg. She was a 1934 graduate of East Penns Valley High School. On Aug. 8, 1936, in Westminster, Md., Esther married Charles Lee Barner, of Aaronsburg. Charles preceded her in death on March 23, 1938. On Nov. 23, 1942, Esther joined the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps, which became the Women's Army Corps on Sept. 1, 1943. She served in the WAC until Aug.11, 1945 as part of the 45th WAC Battalion, obtaining the rank of Tech 4 and earning the WAAC Service Ribbon and the Good Conduct Ribbon. It was in the service where she met and married her second husband, Raymond Eli Mathewson. Raymond also preceded Esther in death on Oct. 27, 1990. Later in the early 1960s, Esther obtained her LPN license and worked at the hospital in Bellefonte and State College. She was a member of the Montandon VFW. She enjoyed Pittsburgh Pirate baseball and Steeler football. Esther is survived by one son, Wayne A. Barner (Helene), of Springfield; and one sister, Jeanne Krape Brock (Clinton), of Lake City, Fla. Also surviving are three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a very special companion, Richard Hinkelman. In addition to both of her husbands, Esther was preceded in death by her siblings, infant Earl (1911), infant Nevin (1913), Harry (1954), Paul (1989) and Kathryn (2006). A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2011, at River Woods in Lewisburg, with the Rev. Judi Dunkelberger officiating. Esther will be laid to rest at Salem Lutheran Cemetery in Aaronsburg during a private service.
