Charles L. (Chuck) Harer passed away on April 4, 2006.
He is survived by his wife, Annabelle Lightner Harer; his son, Dr. Joh
L. Harer of Chapel Hill, NC, his daughter, Judith E. Harer of Portla
d, OR; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two forme
wives, Betty McNeeley Harer and Norman K. Pendleton Harer. Chuck's p
arents were Lester D. Harer and Jennie Kittel Harer.
Chuck Harer was born July 11, 1919 in Huntington, WV. He attended Hunt
ington High School, Marshall College and the University of Cincinnati
. He served in World War II as an aerial navigator in the U.S. Army Ai
Corps.
Chuck moved to Lexington in 1955, where he worked for three years at L
ees Carpets. In 1958, he opened his own office, serving the local comm
unity as a Certified Public Accountant for twenty-six years.
He retired in 1984, but continued to use his accounting expertise to s
erve the community throughout the rest of his life. For 10 years he wa
s the local coordinator of the AARP Tax aid program, which gave tax pr
eparation assistance to the elderly. He was instrumental in bringing t
he housing authority apartments to Diamond Hill, obtaining financing a
d its tax exemption, as well as income tax exemptions for several loc
al clubs and charities, including the Rockbridge Historical Society an
d the Rockbridge Concert Series. He also served on the Industrial Deve
lopment committee that brought Modine to Buena Vista and was treasure
of a variety of community organizations.
For the past fifty years, Chuck was an especially active member of th
e R. E. Lee Memorial Episcopal Church. He served as a church-school te
acher, vestryman, trustee, treasurer and sang in the choir. He and hi
s wife, Norma (Prinny) were among the first mentors of the Education f
or Ministry Program.
Chuck was also known locally as an actor and singer, performing in a v
ariety of shows, concerts and choirs, and serving on the steering comm
ittee for the Rockbridge Choral Society. He is probably best remembere
d for his portrayals of Benjamin Franklin in 1776, Buffalo Bill Cody i
Annie Get Your Gun, and a Yenick in the opera Bartered Bride.
Chuck also served the community as a hospice volunteer and delivered m
eals on wheels. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, presiden
t of the Lexington Rotary Club, a 58 year Mason, a charter member an
d president of the local chapter of the Sons of the American Revolutio
, and organizing president of the local chapter of the American Revol
ution society. He was the first institutional representative of Cub Sc
out Pack 29, serving as cubmaster for three years. Chuck was also secr
etary and treasurer of the Lexington Golf Club and the Lexington Count
y Club and was on the founding committee for the local chapter of th
e YMCA.
Interment will take place at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, April 6, 2006 at th
e Stonewall Jackson Memorial Cemetery. A memorial service will be hel
d at R. E. Lee Memorial Episcopal Church at 10:30 a.m., followed b
y a reception.
The family requests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of con
tributions to the R. E. Lee Memorial Episcopal Church, Boys' Home, YMC
A of Rockbridge or the Rockbridge Area Hospice.
