Gruver, Melva Bailey
Melva Bailey Gruver Passed away in San Leandro, CA on March 21, 2006
, age 95. Born February 19, 1911 in Dubois, PA. She was preceded in de
ath by her husband, Dorsey Barner Gruver, her brothers and sisters, an
d one grandson. Melva is survived by her four children, five grandchil
dren and three great grandchildren. Compassionate by nature, Melva enj
oyed volunteer nursing, care giving and other community service throug
hout most of her adult life. Melva had great respect for education an
d lifelong learning. With a sharp wit and mind, she enjoyed the compan
y of others and kept abreast of world affairs, even after failing eyes
ight curtailed her love of reading. Melva appreciated beauty in its ma
y forms in both nature and art. Her soul responded with delight to ba
bies, whether human or animal, and the burst of unfolding life in spri
g. Melva married Dorsey in New Kensington, PA in 1932. They moved t
o Southern California in 1942 with three children, Martha, Dorsey Jr.
, and Elizabeth. Their fourth child, Nina, was born in 1952. Melva an
d Dorsey moved from Northridge, CA to Ashland, OR in 1977. To continu
e her volunteer work, she joined the Ashland Community Hospital Auxili
ary. She was also active for several years in the Garden Club, Chambe
of Commerce and Shakespeare Festival. After her husband, Dorsey, die
d in 1998, Melva relocated to be near family in Gig Harbor, WA and lat
er to San Leandro, CA. At her request, no services will be held. Her a
shes will be interred at Oakwood Memorial Park, Chatsworth, CA.
