PEKIN ~ Albert H. "Al" Barner, 84, of 2319 Arlington Circle in Pekin
, died at 11:32 a.m. Friday, October 17, 2003 at OSF Saint Francis Med
ical Center in Peoria. He was formerly of Skokie and Chicago.
Born June 1, 1919 in Mill Hall, Clinton Co, PA to Nelson Ira and Ethe
l Ellen Buchanan Barner, he married Lois L. Lambert on January 4, 1941
. She survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, R. Rebecca "Becky" (Bob) Stark of Tho
mpsonville; three grandchildren, Elizabeth E. (Joseph) Clarke of Maren
go, Paul R. Stark of Wheeling and Mary R. (Kenneth) Kolacia of Hinsdal
e; five great-grandchildren, Daniel Clarke, Sarah Clarke, Rebecca Clar
ke, Matthew Clarke and Adam Kolacia; one brother, Ira N. Barner of Pek
in and one sister, Adeline (Joe) Niemiec of Chicago.
His parents preceded him in death.
He was a United States Marine Corps. Veteran of World War II and serve
d in the South Pacific.
He retired from Wickes Corporation after 23 years of service on Februa
y 1, 1981 as the general foreman of the Saginaw, Michigan plant. He a
lso was a former plant manager at the Saginaw plant. He first worked f
or Wickes as a machinist and then as foreman at their Des Plaines, Ill
inois plant. He previously worked for Combustion Engineering Corporati
on in Chicago for 13 years as a machinist.
He was a faithful member and past deacon of Cornerstone Baptist Churc
h in Groveland. He was a former member, deacon and elder of Moody Memo
ial Church in Chicago. He was born again in to the family of God on M
arch 21, 1954.
An avid bowler, he was inducted into the Greater Pekin Bowling Associa
tion Hall of Fame on April 2, 1989. He also was a member of the Americ
an Bowling Congress.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 20, 2003 at Cornerston
e Baptist Church, 18040 Unsicker Road, Groveland. The Rev. Dr. Steve
E. Hauter will officiate. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunda
y at Cornerstone Baptist Church. Burial will be in Prairie Rest Cemete
y at Delavan, with military rites accorded by the United States Marin
e Corps. Arrangements are by Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel
.
