Mervin Edward Runner
Mervin Edward Runner, 88, died Wednesday, May 25, 2005 at Mount Nittan
y Medical Centre, State College, Centre Co, PA in State College.
Mervin was born on May 14, 1917 in Jersey Shore, the son of the late G
uy and Erma Barner Runner of Jersey Shore. He had been a resident of P
ine Grove Mills since May 1, 2003 and was welcomed warmly by the graci
ous neighbors there. On June 26, 1943, he married Marguerite I. Schaef
er, who died March 10, 2002.
Mervin graduated from Jersey Shore High School in 1934, obtained a B
S degree from Albright College, Reading, in 1943, and went on to ear
his master’s degree at the University of PA in Philadelphia and a do
ctorate in Organic Chemistry from the University of Iowa by 1950. He l
ived in LaGrange and West Chicago, Ill., teaching at the Illinois Inst
itute of Technology before going into business for himself in the earl
y 1960s, but considered PA his home and returned there after retiremen
t.
He was the beloved father of two daughters, Donna G. Carlisle and husb
and Jonathan (Josh) of Lewisville, N.C. and Vicki L. Johnson and husba
d Gary of Glen Ellyn, IIl.; the grandfather of Dolores I. Johnson o
f Glen Ellyn, Ill. and Sally Carlisle of Lewisville, N.C.; the great-g
andfather of Kathleen, 8 and Jonathan, 3, of Lewisville, N.C.; and th
e uncle of Jim Runner of Spring Mills and John Runner of Santa Fe, N.M
.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his t
win brother, Marvin H. Runner of State College on Jan. 10, 2004 an
d a sister, Helen Runner Dosmas of Detroit in May, 1974, both formerl
y of Jersey Shore.
A gathering for family and friends to celebrate his life will be hel
d Saturday, May 28, at 3 p.m. at the Trinity Methodist Church, corne
of Glover and Allegheny streets, Jersey Shore, Pa. 17740. Intermen
t of ashes for both Mervin E. and Marguerite I. Schaefer Runner will b
e on May 28, 2005 at 5 p.m. at St. Michael’s Lutheran Church, Cogan St
ation, Pa. 17728.
