Robert W. Stabley
Robert W. Stabley, 85, 195 Stabley Road, Lock Haven, died March 23, 20
03, at the ManorCare Health Services in Jersey Shore. He had resided t
here since February of 2002.
Mr. Stabley was born in McElhattan, Feb. 22, 1918, and was the son o
f the late Ferguson and Gay Wolfe Stabley.
He had attended Lock Haven High School, and was a veteran of World Wa
II, serving with the U.S. Army’s 50th Engineering Combat Battalion.
Mr. Stabley worked for 10 years in the final assembly department of Pi
per Aircraft. He then worked for Hammermill Paper Company in various d
epartments, retiring in 1983 after 30 years of employment.
During his employment at Piper, he owned and operated Corman’s BBQ o
Route 150 in Beech Creek for seven years.
After his retirement from Hammermill, he opened Stabley Family Store i
McElhattan, now Canasorgu Trading Post, operating it for eight years
.
He was a member of the McElhattan United Methodist Church and was a ve
y avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and motorcyc
ling.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Swisher Stabley, whom he married Jun
e 25, 1939. Also surviving are two sons, Kenneth R. and his wife, Sher
y L., Stabley of Woolrich and Richard L. Stabley of McElhattan; a bro
ther, Jack C. Stabley of McElhattan; seven grandchildren; 19 great-gra
dchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Mr. Stabley was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda J. Pursley, wh
o died on Feb. 19, 1995, and a brother, Ferguson Stabley.
Funeral services will be Thursday, March 27, 2003, at 11 a.m., in th
e Yost-Gedon Funeral Home, 121 W. Main St., Lock Haven. Officiating wi
ll be the Rev. John Baney, formerly of the McElhattan United Methodis
t Church. Interment will be in Linnwood Cemetery, McElhattan. Friend
s will be received in the funeral home Wednesday evening from 7 to 9 o
’clock. The family suggests, in lieu of flowers, memorials will be acc
epted to the McElhattan United Methodist Church through the funeral ho
me.
Arrangements are being completed by the Yost-Gedon Funeral Home, 121 W
. Main St., Lock Haven.
