Mr. Carl L. "Puff" Pfirman, 81, of 49 Valley Heights Drive, Williamspo
t, passed away at his home on Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2010.
Born Dec. 6, 1928, at Williamsport, he was the son of the late Louis a
d Margaret (Hess) Pfirman.
Carl was a graduate of the class of 1946 at South Williamsport High Sc
hool. He received a football scholarship to attend Penn State Universi
ty and graduated in 1953 with a BS degree in physical education. He wa
s commissioned into the U.S. Air Force as a 2nd Lieutenant and serve
d during the Korean War. He was awarded the National Defense Service M
edal, United Nations Service Medal, and the Korean Service Medal. He r
eceived an offer from the Philadelphia Eagles, but due to military com
mitments, he was unable to act upon the offer.
Upon his honorable discharge from the military, he continued his educa
tion, receiving a degree in physical therapy from the University of Pe
sylvania.
Carl's career at the former Williamsport Hospital, spanning almost thr
ee decades, included developing the Rehabilitation Services Departmen
t and the Sports Medicine Program. He was on the consulting staff of m
any county nursing care facilities. Carl was the recipient of the Lyco
ming County Medical Society award for "Contributions in the Field of R
ehabilitation Medicine." Carl went on to work at Lancaster General Hos
pital and was instrumental in developing the Willow Lakes Health Cente
Rehabilitation Outpatient Services. He was last employed by the form
er Rose View Manor as its Director of Physical Therapy, retiring in 19
95.
Carl was preceded in death by his first wife, Marion Knapik Pfirman, h
is granddaughter, Abigail Hill and also by his son-in-law, Brian Walke
.
Carl is survived by his wife, Sherry, with whom he celebrated 41 year
s of marriage. Also surviving are their children, Michael (Kathleen) P
firman, Stephen (Kim) Pfirman, Jeffrey Pfirman, Petrea Walker, Andre
a (James) Hill, Alicea (James) Gable, and Mara (William) Hause. He i
s also survived by grandchildren, Nicholas, Katie, Kristopher, Kinsie
, Tierney, and Josie Pfirman, Jacob and Joseph Walker, Sarah Olivia an
d Luke Hill and Logan and Thomas Gable. He also leaves behind his sist
er, Joan Loughry and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, 2010, at t
he Charles M. Noll Funeral Home, 1 E. Central Ave., South Williamsport
. His priest, Reverend Father Michael S. McCormick, will officiate. In
terment will immediately follow at the Saint John's Lutheran "Brick" C
hurch Cemetery at Montgomery.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation on Saturda
y morning from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral ho
me.
