Longtime Lampasas City Councilman E.E. "Junior" Ohnmeiss, 77, died Nov
ember 10, 2003 at Rollins Brook Community
Hospital. Funeral services were Nov. 13 at Dodson Funeral Home Chape
l with Minister Reid Schaub officiating. Burial
followed at Pilgrim's Rest Cemetery near Evant.
Mr. Ohnmeiss was born April 5, 1926, in Williamsport, Pa., to Ellery a
d Susan Florey Ohnmeiss. When he was 6 years old,
Mr. Ohnmeiss was sent to Girard College in Philadelphia, and he gradua
ted from there in 1943. Mr. Ohnmeiss then attended
Penn State University for one year and was called to Army duty durin
g World War II. He earned battle stars for service in
France and Germany. After VE Day, Mr. Ohnmeiss and his unit were sen
t to North Camp Hood to train for assignments in the
Pacific. He was there when the war ended.
He married Mavis Renken on February 17, 1946, in Hamilton [Texas]. Mr
. Ohnmeiss had lived in Lampasas since 1954. He
served as acting mayor for one year. He then re-entered the politica
l arena in 1992, when he again was elected to the council.
After he resigned his seat in 1998, he was named "Honorary Councilma
for Life" by the city. He had worked at Wieser Feed
Mill and Evergreen Feed Mill for a combined 44 years until his retirem
ent in April 1991. Mr. Ohnmeiss was a member of the
Lions Club and AMVETS Post 80, where he served as provost marshal.
In March 1999, a portion of U.S. Highway 190 was renamed E.E. J. Ohnme
iss Drive in his honor.
Mr. Ohnmeiss is survived by his wife of Lampasas; two daughters, Mar
y Atherton, and husband, Woody, of Gatesville, and Dr. Donna Ohnmeiss
, of Plano; a son, John Ohnmeiss, and wife Elizabeth, of Lampasas; gra
dchildren, Celia and Joel Wayne Sellers; and great-grandchildren, Che
yenne and Wyatt Sellers, of Jonesboro.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Ohnmeiss, and by two bro
thers and a sister. The family requested that memorials be made to th
e charity of one's choice. Arrangements by Dodson Funeral Home of Lamp
