Thomas Lee Nicholas

Thomas Lee Nicholas, 78, passed away at his home in Tylersville surrou
ded by family and friends on Monday, Nov. 5, 2007 after a lengthy ill
ess.
He was born May 1, 1929 in Tylersville, a son of Verius and Margaret (
Slaterbeck) Nicholas and graduated from the former Sugar Valley Vocati
onal School in 1947.
He enlisted in the United States Air Force and spent many years in Pan
ama. After an honorable discharge from the Air Force, he lived in Eri
e for several years and then returned to Clinton Co, where he worked a
s a machinist at Piper Aircraft in Lock Haven. He also owned and opera
ted a charcoal business.
He was formerly married to the late Marie Schmidt of Erie.
In 1966, he married Grace (Holdren) Matter and for 40 years, he and hi
s wife operated a dairy farm near Booneville.
Tom was an avid and skillful player of checkers and poker and enjoye
d spending time in the outdoors, especially gardening. He was passiona
te about dairy farming and ingenious in his inventions to improve hi
s farm’s productivity.
Along with his wife Grace, he is survived by a daughter, Yvonne (Willi
am) Miller of Loganton; a stepson, Thomas (Darla) Matter; three stepda
ughters, Peggy (Robert) Fegley, Cathy (Carl) Boob and Sandy (Danny) St
over; a brother, Karl “Scott” (Donna) Nicholas of State College; thre
e sisters, Elinor (Clair) Jones of Centre Hall, Audrey Gummo of Fleetw
ood and Linda (Charles) Morton of Tamarack; a grandson, Jonathan Bierl
y of Loganton; two great-grandsons, Blaze and Tanner Bierly of Loganto
; and many step grandchildren, step great grandchildren and step grea
t great grandchildren.
He will be greatly missed by his granddaughter and caregiver Robin Sey
ler.
Tom was preceded in death by a beloved daughter, Darlene, and a brothe
, Gene of Macungie.
The funeral service will be held Friday, Nov. 9, 2007 at 2 p.m. in th
e Wayne P. Urbine Funeral Home Inc., 95 E. Main St., Loganton, with th
e Rev. Melvin Musser officiating. Visitation will be held in the funer
al home Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday one hour prior to the ser
vice. Interment will be held in Tylersville Union Cemetery.
