Martha B. Young
Martha B. Young, 96, passed away Monday, July 3, 2006 at
Bethany Village.
Martha was born in Williamsport on January 4, 1910 to the
late John and Nellie Barner. She was also preceded in death
by her brother, Elwood and sister Rhea.
She is survived by her loving husband of 22 years, Carl E.
Young of Bethany Village; 4 step daughters, Mary Lois Miller
of Cabot, PA, Margaret Carol Wray of Durham, NC, Ruth
Elizabeth McGuire of Vienna, Austria, and Kathryn Young
Carmines of New Cumberland; niece, Linda Brenneman of
Carlisle and nephew, Floyd Hutchinson of FL.
Martha was a member of Camp Hill United Methodist Church.
She was a graduate of Christian Education and Kindergarten
teaching from the Lucy Web Hyes United Methodist Training
School of Washington, DC.
After college, she served a term in a Methodist Mission
teaching kindergarten. Following that, she took care of her
mother and then father and then got a temporary job at
Beneficial Finance. The temporary job lasted 35 years. She
also served as a volunteer director of children's work at Pine
Street United Methodist Church of Williamsport, PA.
In her active years at Bethany Village, she served as
volunteer treasurer of the Residents' Council and of the
annual Village Fair. She also spent many hours visiting
bedfast patients in Skilled Nursing. She enjoyed flower
gardening and making bouquets for the Bethany Village
esidents. She was soft spoken, gentle and a great listener.
Martha loved to travel and was a great traveling companion.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the
Bethany Village Retirement Center for the Golden Maple
Memory Support Neighborhood, 325 Wesley Drive,
Mechanicsburg, PA 17055.
The family expresses appreciation for the outstanding service
of the entire staff.
A memorial service will be held in the Community Room East
at Bethany Village on Tuesday, July 11, 2006 at 2 p.m.
