The Rev. Dr. Carl E. Young, 103, of Mechanicsburg, PA died on Decembe
20, 2011 at his home in Bethany Village.
Dr. Young was born June 11, 1908 to the late Jacob and Rosa (Metzger) Young of Williamsport, PA. He graduated from Williamsport High in 1926, went on to receive his BA from Albright College in 1930 and his Bachelor of Divinity from The Evangelical School of Theology (now United Theological Seminary) in 1933. He attended Biblical Seminary (now Union Seminary) in New York City. He earned his Masters of Divinity in 1950 from Gettysburg Lutheran Seminary and was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Divinity degree by Albright College in 1966. In 1934, he married Lois Spencer Horton and was assigned to serve Zion Evangelical Church in Scranton, PA. Additional pastoral assignments included a 3 point charge in Mt. Holly Springs, PA; 17 years at Walbrook Memorial Church in Baltimore, MD; and 19 years as the founding and senior pastor of Milford Mill United Methodist Church, in Pikesville, MD. After retiring, in 1972, he served 5 years as Pastor of Visitation for Grace UM Church in Baltimore, MD. In June of 1977, he and Lois moved to Bethany Village where they immediately became involved in their new community - Lois as editor of The Villager and Carl as the first Campus Chaplain which included writing biographies of all new residents. After Lois' death in 1981, Carl continued as The Villager editor for the next 10 years. In 1983 he married Martha Barner Boyer. During the 80's, Dr. Young was instrumental in raising $1.5 million for the "new" Health Care Center. In 1984, it was Dr. Young's vision that established the Care Assurance Fund at Bethany Village. This fund reached $100,000 by the end of the first year. In 1991 he was declared "The Father of the Care Assurance Endowment Fund," which now exceeds $10,000,000 and which supports a growing number of residents that have outlived their as

Dr. Young was chosen as the 2003 "Cumberland County Outstanding Senior". He was named the 2004 Distinguished Alumnus by Albright College Alumni Association. At his death, he was the oldest living member of the Baltimore/Washington Conference of the United Methodist Church and the oldest resident of Bethany Village. Dr. Youg lived a life marked by integrity, concern for others, generous givig, and joyful service. His example of walking daily in the presence of God is one that calls each of us to such living.
