DONALD BASOM, 81, Selinsgrove
SELINSGROVE - Donald Burnell Basom, 81, of Selinsgrove, formerly of
Enola and Duncannon, entered into eternal rest at 12:45 p.m.
Wednesday, March 17, 2004, at Sunbury Community Hospital, where he
was a patient for two weeks. He was in failing health since this
past October.
He was born Jan. 5, 1923, in Snyder Co, a son of the late Jay
Gould and Grace (Spangler) Basom. He and the former Betty Geraldine
Barner celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary this past Aug. 11.
He was educated in rural Snyder County schools.
Mr. Basom served with the Army Air Corps during World War II with
the 343rd Support Group in England.
Following his military service, he was employed for more than 40
years with the PA Railroad, Enola Yards, as a machinist in
the diesel shop. He was a member of the AFL-CIO and was also engaged
in farming most of his life.
He was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Shamokin Dam.
He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather who
enjoyed gardening.
Mr. Basom was skilled in woodworking and welding.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are one daughter and
son-in-law, Wendalee B. and Douglas J. Albeck of Newport; three
grandchildren, Talia Lynn Davis and her husband Dean of Patuxent
River Md., SRA Kevin Michael Albeck of Fort Drum, N.Y. and Daniel
James Albeck of Newport; four great-grandchildren, Kyle Trey, Krista
Marie, Sarah Anne and Anna Mae Davis; one brother and sister-in-law,
Charles E. and Edith Basom of Selinsgrove; two sisters and
brothers-in-law, Mary and Leon Clayberger of Selinsgrove, and Jemilla
and Roy Kerstetter of RR1 Port Trevorton; and two generations of
ieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Nevin J. Basom
and two sisters, Lena Coleman and Anita Sipe.
Visitors may call from 7 to 9 tonight at the George P. Garman
Funeral Home, 606 N. Front St., Liverpool. The funeral will be
conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home by the Rev. Wayne C.
Muthler, his pastor.
Burial will be in St. John (Barner's) Cemetery, RR1 Liverpool.
