    Mervin Edward Runner
    Mervin Edward Runner, 88, died Wednesday, May 25, 2005 at Mount Nittan
    y Medical Centre, State College, Centre Co, PA in State College.
    Mervin was born on May 14, 1917 in Jersey Shore, the son of the late G
    uy and Erma Barner Runner of Jersey Shore. He had been a resident of P
    ine Grove Mills since May 1, 2003 and was welcomed warmly by the graci
    ous neighbors there. On June 26, 1943, he married Marguerite I. Schaef
    er, who died March 10, 2002.
    Mervin graduated from Jersey Shore High School in 1934, obtained a B
    S degree from Albright College, Reading, in 1943, and went on to ear
    his master’s degree at the University of PA in Philadelphia and a do
    ctorate in Organic Chemistry from the University of Iowa by 1950. He l
    ived in LaGrange and West Chicago, Ill., teaching at the Illinois Inst
    itute of Technology before going into business for himself in the earl
    y 1960s, but considered PA his home and returned there after retiremen
    t.
    He was the beloved father of two daughters, Donna G. Carlisle and husb
    and Jonathan (Josh) of Lewisville, N.C. and Vicki L. Johnson and husba
    d Gary of Glen Ellyn, IIl.; the grandfather of Dolores I. Johnson o
    f Glen Ellyn, Ill. and Sally Carlisle of Lewisville, N.C.; the great-g
    andfather of Kathleen, 8 and Jonathan, 3, of Lewisville, N.C.; and th
    e uncle of Jim Runner of Spring Mills and John Runner of Santa Fe, N.M
    .
    In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his t
    win brother, Marvin H. Runner of State College on Jan. 10, 2004 an
    d a sister, Helen Runner Dosmas of Detroit in May, 1974, both formerl
    y of Jersey Shore.
    A gathering for family and friends to celebrate his life will be hel
    d Saturday, May 28, at 3 p.m. at the Trinity Methodist Church, corne
    of Glover and Allegheny streets, Jersey Shore, Pa. 17740. Intermen
    t of ashes for both Mervin E. and Marguerite I. Schaefer Runner will b
    e on May 28, 2005 at 5 p.m. at St. Michael’s Lutheran Church, Cogan St
    ation, Pa. 17728.
    In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in Mervin’s name to Trinit
    y Methodist Church, Glover and Allegheny streets, Jersey Shore, Pa. 17
    740, or by calling (570) 398-2913.

    Marvin Runner, 86, of Boalsburg, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at Mt
    . Nittany Medical Center.

    He was born on May 14, 1917, in Jersey Shore, a son of the late Guy Ze
    a Runner and Emma Bamer Runner.

    On Sept. 6, 1942, he married Kathryn Wanner, who survives.

    He graduated from Jersey Shore High School in 1934. In 1936, he spen
    t a year training in the Merchant Marines at Annapolis. He shifted hi
    s direction to academics and graduated from Albright College in 1941
    . In 1945, he graduated from Oberlin Seminary with a master's degree i
    sacred theology.

    He was awarded the Doctorate of Ministries by Vanderbilt University i
    1974. In 1946, he took a year of study at the American School of Ori
    ental Research in Jerusalem.

    Following his return to the United States, he was the pastor of Evange
    lical United Brethren churches in OH (1947-1948), Maryland (1948-1949)
    , Altoona (1949-1950), Williamsport (1950-1954) and in the State Colle
    ge area (1954-1957).

    He received a Master of Science degree in wildlife management from Pen
    State in 1961, while working as a game biologist for the PA Game Com
    mission. He then joined the department of horticulture at Penn State
    . In addition to his teaching, he directed the trial flower gardens o
    the Penn State campus from 1972 until his retirement as associate pr
    ofessor in 1982. During his retirement, he continued with his interest
    s in archaeology, botany and eastern and western religions, and he dev
    eloped his skills in the binding and restoration of books.

    In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Jim and his wife
    , Dixie Hansen, of Spring Mills, and John and his wife, Kathleen Kehoe
    , of White Deer; a twin brother, Mervin E. Runner, of Pine Grove Mills
    ; two step-grandchildren, Erica Svec, of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Yuri Svec
    , of Ames, Iowa; a brother-in-law, Orlo Dosmas, husband of the late He
    len Dosmas, of Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.; and numerous nieces and nep
    hews.

    Interment took place in a private ceremony at the Jersey Shore Cemeter
    y on Jan. 13. A memorial gathering is planned for this spring, which w
    ill take place on his birthday. A designation for memorial contributio
    s will be announced at that time.

    Arrangements are under the direction of Koch Funeral Home, 2401 S. Ath
    erton St., State College.
