    Harry C. Barner, 88, of Mercer, passed away at AHN- Grove City on Monday, May 31, 2021 at 1:28 AM.

    Harry was born in Templeton, PA on October 12, 1932 to Howard Maurice and Dorothy (Fravel) Barner. His mother died when he was three years old and he was raised by his father and step-mother, Elizabeth Coleman Barner.

    Harry attended Mercer Schools until his enlistment in the US Army during the Korean conflict. In the 1960’s, he was a member of the Mercer Volunteer Fire Department as well as the Mercer Police Department. In the 1980’s, Harry attended classes and received his GED, after which he was asked to speak at various classes in the Mercer County school districts about the importance of receiving a proper education. Harry was active in Bethany Presbyterian Church, Mercer, serving in many capacities, including Elder and Pulpit Committee.

    After many years in the auto industry, Harry retired from Cunningham Funeral Home, Inc., in October of 1997. However, he continued to work for the funeral home on a part-time basis until the time of his death.

    Harry loved spending time with his family, hearing about the escapades of his two great grandchildren, playing with his grand dog, Baron, and “coaching” his beloved Pittsburgh Steelers. He had the gift of gab and never met a person with whom he couldn’t strike up a conversation.

    He is preceded in death by his mother, father, step-mother; sister: Betty (Barner) Dummett; three brothers: Richard, Clair and Thomas Barner; his mother-in-law and father-in-law: Ralph and Elizabeth Smith; and many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

    Harry is survived by his wife, Sarah (Smith) Barner, whom he married on October 23, 1954, at home; two daughters: Kimberly (Michael) Kaelin in Sewickley, PA and Pamela Barner at home; two granddaughters: Stephanie (Thomas) Law, Rochester, PA and Kristen (Sam) West, Newton Falls, OH; and two great grandchildren: Adelyn Belle Law and Albert Allen Law. When Adelyn heard that her Grandpa Harry died, she chose to walk in her Memorial Day parade in his memory. He is also survived by his brother: David (Kathryn), Arvada, CO as well as many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends who he considered family.

    Memorial Contributions can be made to Bethany Presbyterian Church, Mercer or Club Pet Adoption, Inc., Transfer.

    Funeral service will be at Cunningham Funeral Home, Inc., 144 S. Pitt Street, Mercer, PA 16137 on Friday, June 4, 2021 at 1:00 PM with Sue Allen, CLP officiating. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Thursday, June 3, 2021 from 6:00-8:00 PM and also on Friday, June 4, 2021 from 11:00 AM until time of service. Burial will be at Carpenter Cemetery, Springfield Twp., PA.
