DANVILLE, Pa. - Nancy Carrol Barner Reynolds, 86, teacher, formerly o
f Madison Wis., passed away on Aug. 23, 2016, at Maria Hall Hospice. S
he was born June 4, 1930, in Wilkinsburg, Pa., to Ray Russel Barner an
d the former Letha Armeda Brown of Mount Lebanon, Pa. Nancy taught he
parents to love a child again after their loss of twins in child bir
th and a four year old son, Richard George "Dickie."
She graduated from Mount Lebanon High School and spent many a summer w
ith her parents at the Andrews Hotel in Shady Side, Md. She discovere
d her vocation of teaching from Miss Ethel Andrews, teacher at Shady S
ide. She graduated from Cornell College in 1952 and quickly began he
career in teaching. She taught elementary school in the Madison, Wis
. school district for almost 40 years. Earning many teacher awards, he
biggest satisfaction came from teaching many of Madison's at risk ch
ildren and advocating for early education programs. A perpetual learne
herself, she spent one summer break traveling to New Zealand with fe
llow teacher, Patty Lucas, to study their excellent literacy programs.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Attorney Robert L. Reynolds
. Through her first marriage (Jan E. Marfyak) she is survived by two c
hildren, a son, Jan S. Marfyak of Washington, D.C. and daughter, Broo
k (Dolph) Courchaine of Danville, Pa. From her second marriage she i
s survived by her adopted son, Dan C. (Laura) Reynolds of New York Cit
y, N.Y. Upon retirement she taught four of five grandchildren to explo
e the world through the Elderhostel programs, Pierce (Lucy) Courchain
e, Taylor Courchaine, Claire Marfyak, and Lee Marfyak. Her fifth and n
ewest grandchild is Stephen Marfyak.
In her final years, with dementia taking hold, she was still able to t
each her children about her past ancestors in the Barner and Brown fam
ilies, including Adam Barner, a revolutionary war hero of Liverpool Pa
. No services will be held. Nancy's last requests were for honorarium
s to go to the Madison School District. Her body was donated to scienc
e to continue teaching medical students and researchers on the mysteri
es of Dementia and Alzheimer's.
