Mabel was adopted by the Thomas Pendray family of Jamestown, North Dak
ota in June 1903 when she was just 6 years old. She was the biologica
l daughter of Daniel Henry Ohnmeiss and Clara Anna Wren. Her biologica
l siblings were: Raymond Harvey Ohnmeiss, Elsie M. Ohnmeiss, Ida Delph
ine Ohnmeiss and Phoebe Olive Ohnmeiss. Mabel attended Jamestown publi
c schools. She graduated from Agricultural College in Fargo (now know
as North Dakota State University) with a 2 year Domestic Science cou
se certificate. She later graduated with a nurse's degree from Bismar
ck Hospital, Burleigh county, North Dakota. That is where she met Fre
d Hagel who was to become her husband. Fred was a patient that she wa
s treating for wounds he received in World War I. They were married i
June 1923 and honeymooned at Bismarck, Yellowstone Park and the Blac
k Hills. There were no children from this marriage. She died in a ca
accident along with her husband in Selby, South Dakota when their Bu
ick collided with the rear wheels of a truck, which was reported to ha
ve been backing out on the highway from the parking lot at the Dari-Fr
eeze drive-in. The mishap occurred before 9:00 PM on U.S. Highway 12 a
d 83, just west of the Kost Oil Station at the west edge of Selby. He
husband was killed immediately and Mabel died in the ambulance on he
way to the hospital. Cause of Death: "Fracture of Cervical Spine."
