Larry L. Welshans Sr., age 79, a resident of Oak Ridge Personal Care Home died June 6, 2009 at the Gatehouse Hospice after an extended illness.
He had formerly resided in the Lock Haven area. Mr. Welshans was born in Rauchtown on June 9, 1929 and was a son of the late Frank H. and Ida Gamble Welshans.
Larry was married to the late Jean Dickey Welshans who preceded him in death on Oct. 17, 1988. They had been married for 34 years.
Mr. Welshans was a veteran of the Korean War, serving with the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953. He then went to work for Piper Aircraft while seving as a deputy wildlife conservation officer. He retired from Pipe Aircraft after 17 years of service in 1971 and retired from the Pa. Game Commission in 1989.
In 1983 he received the employee of the year award from the Game Commission.
He enjoyed American history, wildlife and the outdoors.
Larry had been a member of the St. James Lutheran Church of Rauchtown.
Survivors include three sons, Larry and his wife Jane Welshans Jr., of Lewistown, Kenneth Welshans of Rauchtown, and Gregory and his wife Tammy Welshans of Rauchtown; three daughters, Susan and her husband William Benton of Huntingdon, Mona and her husband David Calhoun of McElhattan and Peggy and her husband Alton Lyons of Atoka, OK.
Also surviving are his siblings, Merril Welshans, Richard Welshans, his twin brother, Barry Welshans, Jane Buttorff, Paul Welshans, Lewis Welshans, Mavis Rauch, Stanley Welshans, Sharon Lamey and Bud Welshans; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, E. Williams Welshans, and a sister, Nancy Shadle.
Funeral services for Larry L. Welshans Sr. will be held on Wednesday, June 10, 2009, at 10 a.m. in the Yost-Gedon Funeral Home, 121 W. Mai St., Lock Haven.
Officiating will be Pastor Thomas C. Jones of the Avis United Methodist Church. Interment will be in the Jersey Shore Cemetery.
Family and friends will be received in the funeral home Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m.
Memorial contributions will be accepted to the Gatehouse Hospice or the Juvenile Diabetes Association through the funeral home.
