• Obituary: Barner, Harry E. Jr. EAST GREENBUSH Harry Barner, 91 of East Greenbush, passed peaceful ly on December 25, 2020, in his home. He was predeceased by Elizabeth, his wife of 61 years; and his children, Robert, Marie, and Susan. He is survived by his children, Virginia "Ginger" (Bruce), Stephen, Harry "Bud," Philip, Paul, and Timothy. Harry and Betty were very active serving their Lord and Savior as well as their community. Together they sought opportunities to demonstrate God's love to others, in gratitude for all He did for them. Harry started teaching industrial arts at Rensselaer City schools in 1958 and retired in 1991 but continued to substitute teach for many years, becoming a familiar face for 50 years of Rensselaer's youth. He couldn't go anywhere in town without hearing "Hey, Mr. B.!" accompanied by a friendly wave. Harry was too young for service during World War II, and instead worked as a messenger for the railroad, riding his bicycle in all kinds of weather to wake trainmen at their homes when they were needed to make up a crew. He worked 48 hour weeks beginning at age 16 and still excelled in his schoolwork. He met Betty while attending Oswego State. He often told the story of how he zeroed in on a beautiful soprano melody that he heard coming somewhere from a large group of young people, singing around a campfire, and he approached her with the word "harmonize." They were married in 1953, while Harry was serving in the Army, having been drafted into service during the Korean War, and they remained dedicated to each other and true to their vows, the rest of their lives. They sang many duets in church and, through the 1960s and '70s, Harry often led the singing during Sunday evening services. Music was always a big part of their lives. A memorial service will be held when restrictions are lifted and people are once again able to gather in large groups. No flowers please. Irene B. Shelley, age 84, of Corning, passed away on Saturday, Octobe
17, 2015 at Absolut Care. She was born on March 24, 1931 in Corning
, the daughter of Harry E. and Gertrude M. (Simons) Barner. She marrie
d Jack Shelley on May 16, 1959 in Corning. He predeceased her on Jun
e 13, 2011.

Irene graduated from Northside High School in 1949 and she went to wor
k for Corning Glass Works as a secretary. She was a member of the Bear
town Alliance Church in Gang Mills.

She is survived by her siblings, Harry Barner of Rensselaer, NY, Shirl
ey (Oscar) Benner of Mt. Pleasant Mills, PA, and James (Gloria) Barne
of Corning, stepdaughters, Susan (David) Auvil of Welbourne , FL an
d Karlene (Rev. Chris) Warden of Belleville, MI, stepson, John (Dawn
) Shelley of Charlotte, NC, step grandchildren, step great grandchildr
en, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister-
in-law, Betty Barner.

It was Irene's wish that there be no calling hours. A graveside servic
e will be held on Thursday, October 22, 2015 at 12:00 pm at Barner Cem
etery in Liverpool, PA with the Reverend Daniel E. Barner officiating.

Susan B. Christiansen, 46, of 3196 Route 488, went home to be with th
e Lord after a long illness Friday, July 25, 2003 at her home.
Friends called Sunday, July 27 and Monday, July 28 at the Canandaigu
a Baptist Church. Funeral services followed at the church, with the Re
v. Doug Allen officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Susan was born July 26, 1956, in Fulton, the daughter of Harry E. an
d Elizabeth Brackett Barner. She was a member of the Canandaigua Bapti
st Church, where she was a former trustee and was involved in youth mi
istry. She loved singing, skiing and being involved with the youth.
Susan graduated from State University at Geneseo with a master's degre
e. She was a special education teacher for the Phelps-Clifton Spring
s School District for the last 14 years. Prior to that she worked at t
he Finger Lakes Community College Resource Center. She was a member o
f the New York State Teachers Association.
Susan helped run the family farm with her husband, Richard.
She is survived by her loving husband of 23 years, Richard Christianse
; her parents, Harry and Elizabeth Barner of Rensselaer; sisters an
d brothers, Virginia (John) Bruce of Rensselaer, Stephen (Jeanne) Barn
er of Vermont, Harry Barner Jr. of Rensselaer, the Rev. Philip (Sandra
) Barner of Elwood City, Pa., the Rev. Paul (Elvira) Barner of Davao C

'61 County Traffic Toll Reaches 4;

Snyder County's auto fatality record for 1961 climbed sharply
during the week as a four-year-old girl died in the path of a
motorist Saturday afternoon.

Victim of the weekend tragedy was Cindy Marie Benner, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Oscar H. Benner, R. R. 2, Mt. Pleasant Mills. She was
killed when she dashed across Route 104, the Middleburg-Liverpool
highway, about two miles south of Mt. Pleasant Mills.

NO INQUEST
Accident near Mt. Pleasant Mills occurred at 4:05 P. M. Saturday.
Dr. William Weber, Snyder County coroner, said it was unavoidable.
Miss Sarah Master, 22, of Beaver springs, told police she was in the
act of passing a parked car as she drove south along the highway when
the child ran into her path. She died instantly of a crushed chest
and internal injuries.
Born in Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg, on December 12,
1956, the child attended St. Thomas EUB Sunday School in Mt. Pleasant
Mills. The Reverend William Glant, pastor, officiated at funeral
services conducted from Garman's Funeral Home Tuesday afternoon,
Interment was in Barner's (Saint John's) Lutheran Church Cemetery Live
pool RD 1, Perry Co, PA, Liverpool RD.
Surviving are the girl's parents, Oscar H. and Shirley G. Barner
Benner, and a young sister, Beverly Ann Benner, at home. She also
leaves her maternal grandfather, Harry Barner, of Corning, N. Y., and
Mrs. James F. Mengle, of Mt. Pleasant Mills.
