Marjorie M. Hatkevich, 85, Swatara Township, passed away Thursday, Oct
ober 25, 2012 at her home.
Born July 13, 1927 in Bernville, she was the daughter of the late Barn
er and Cecilia (Barner) Gamby, and was also preceded in death by her s
ister, Madeline Lysaght; her son in law, Robert Hess II and her grandd
aughter, Jennifer Hess.
Her beloved husband, Walter H. Hatkevich, passed away in 2003, just sh
y of their 60th wedding anniversary.
She was a graduate of William Penn High School and attended Penn State
, where she met her husband; volunteered at Downtown Daily Bread; love
d to read Louis L'Amour books and enjoyed knitting, crocheting, makin
g Christmas ornaments and baking. As a leader in the Girl Scouts of Am
erica, Hemlock Council, she spent many years working with and preparin
g young girls for life.
Mrs. Hatkevich was dedicated to her family and her church. She was a m
ember for over 40 years at Paxton Presbyterian Church, where she wa
s a deacon and member of the Kirkers Sunday School Class. Deeply invol
ved in church functions, she was part of the Kitchen Crew, cooking an
d baking for various events, and was a member of the Sewing Circle, ma
king Comfort Blankets for children and women in crisis.
She especially enjoyed traveling and spending time in Craigsville, V
A with her son; where she helped build his log cabin, and attended Leb
anon Presbyterian Church there, helping with the Apple Butter Boil.
Surviving are her children: Janice Hess, with whom she resided, Denni
s (and his wife, Tommy Sue) Hatkevich, Craigsville, VA and Joyce Smith
, Harrisburg; her brother, Barner Gamby, Colonial Park; 5 grandchildre
, Robert Hess III, Crystal Carpenter, Grace Jones, Jared Smith and Be
thany Smith; 5 great grandchildren, Ryan, Nathen, Crystian, Cade and A
iden; and nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held 1 pm Friday, November 2, 2012 in her ch
urch with the Rev. John Green officiating. There will be a visitatio
from 12 noon until time of services. Burial will be in Indiantown Ga
p National Cemetery Friday morning at 10 am.
