Will of George Barner of Liverpool Township

In the name of God Amen, I George Barner of Liverpool Township in the County of Perry and State of Pennsylvania Farmer. Being weak in body, but of sound mind memory and understanding but considering the uncetainty of this transitory life do make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following to wit.

1st, It is my will and I do order that all my just debts and funeral expenses be duly paid and satisfied as soon as conveniently can be after my death.

2d, Should my beloved wife Mary survive me I do order and direct my hereinafter named executors to collect and receive the one third of the income of all my real estate and pay the same to my said wife annually during her natural life. She shall have sufficient room in the house where I at present reside, for her accommodation. She shall have sufficient household and kitchen furniture of her own selection, for the use also wood sufficient cut and put to her door as long as she lives.

3d What I have given to my son John in his lifetime shall be considered his full share of my property of every kind and sort.

4th My daughters Elizabeth, Frances and Lydia shall each have two hundred dollars, it being the same amount which I have heretofore given to my other children. Which several sums stands charged against my other children in my book. If I pay the abovementioned amounts to my said daughters in my lifetime and is charged against them in my book the above bequest is then complied with and will put my children all equal.

5th I do order and require my Executors to procure and erect head and foot stones to the memory of myself and wife as soon after our deaths as can conveniently be done.

6th I give and bequeath unto my son Samuel the mansion farm on which I, at present reside, also the mountain tract adjoining Jacob Kline, Charles Armstrong and others in said Township, him my said son Samuel to pay out the sum of three thousand dollars to my children, namely Henry, Jacob, Elizabeth, Sarah, Frances, Mary and Lydia, share and share alike one year after my death and in the event that my wife survives me, my said son Samuel is to give the one third of the income of said farm for the support of my said wife as long as she lives as hereibefore mentioned, the one half of the amount above mentioned to be paid to my above named children at my death and the other half at the death of my said wife, but if I should survive my said wife the whole amount to be paid by Samuel one year after my death as above mentioned.

7th I give and bequeath unto my son Adam the farm on which he at present resides adjoining Jacob Barner the heirs of John Huggins deceased and others (four acres of timber land of said farm reserved for the use and benefit of my farm in Wild Cat Valley to be taken from the White Oak corner adjoining Abner Knight to be surveyed off in a square piece) and said Adam to pay out the sum of three thousand dollars t
o my children, namely Henry, Jacob, Elizabeth, Sarah, Frances, Mary and Lydia, share and share alike, and in the event that my wife survives me said Adam is to give the one third of the income of said farm fo the support of my said wife as long as she lives as hereinbefore mentioned, the one half of the above mentioned sum to be paid by Adam at my death and the other half at the death of my said wife, but if I survive my said wife the whole amount to be paid by said Adam to my children above named one year after my death.

8th The farm in Wild Cat Valley which I own and is at present rented by Henry Barner [**] is to be appraised as soon as convenient after my death by twelve men. Nine of them to be chosen one by each of my children and three to be agreed upon by them together. My daughters Frances and Lydia to have the right to take the farm at said appraisement, take it jointly or either one of them, and if my said daughters object or refuse to take the said farm at the appraisement then the same is to be sold, and [**] by my executors and the proceeds thereof together with all my personal properties and other effects equally divided share and share alike amongst all my children or their heirs, namely Henry, Jacob, Adam, Samuel, Elizabeth, Sarah, Frances, Mary and Lydia. The Wild Cat farm whether taken at the appraisement as above stated or sold said farm to be subject to the one third of the income for the use of my wife in the same manner as Samuel and Adam.

9th And lastly I nominate constitute and appoint my sons Henry and Samuel to be the executors of this my last will and testament. I empower my said executors to execute a deed of conveyance to my son Adam fo the farm herein bequeathed to him, and I empower my son Henry separately as one of the executors to execute a deed of conveyance to my so Samuel [**] the several tracts of land herein bequeathed to said Samuel.

M. BARNER, farmer, Section 9, P. O. Belle Plaine, was born in Clinto
Co, Pa., in 1828. When he was fifteen years of age, he moved to OH
. He was reared on a farm and educated in the common schools. In 187
3 he moved to Sumner Co, Kan., and settled in Palestine Township, wher
e he owns 96? acres of land, all of which he has brought to a high sta
te of cultivation. His farm is principally fenced with hedge, having b
ut little of the barbed wire. His residence is located on Section 9, a
d surrounded with a beautiful grove of trees. He has a fine large bar
with convenient yards and stock scales, etc. Handles the best grade
d stock. His crop for 1882 was 3,000 bushels of corn, 7,000 bushels o
f wheat and forty head of fat cattle, and now has on hand 100 head o
f stock cattle and 200 hogs. He has on his place 1,600 peach trees, 30
0 apples trees and large quantities of small fruits of various kinds
. He has been Town Treasurer three years and a member of the School Bo
ard for six years. He was married to Miss Martha Ann Mohn, of Sangamo
Co, Ill., in 1855, and has eight children.

ABRAHAM LINCOLN BARNER

ABRAHAM LINCOLN BARNER. Some of the most substantial people of Kansa
s today, well able to ride about over the improved highways in their a
utomobiles, came into the state in the early days with the slow and te
dious method of the prairie schooner or the mover's wagon. Such an emi
grant party arrived in Sumner County in 1873. They had come overland f
om Central Illinois, being twenty-six days en route. Three wagons com
prised the train, and the driver of one of those wagons, then thirtee
years of age, was Abraham Lincoln Barner, who is now living retire
d at Belle Plaine in Summer Co, and for years has been prominently kno
wn as a farmer, stockman, land owner, banker and closely identified wi
th many of the business and civic affairs of his home section.

The head of the family at that time was his father, Michael Barner. Mi
chael Barner had come out to Summer County in the spring of 1873, wit
h two other men, and they bought three-quarter sections, two for $80
0 each and another for $850. One of these quarters had an unfinished h
ouse on it, but one of the familiar Kansas winds of that day soon ble
w it away. When Michael Barner brought his family out he bought 160 ac
es near one of the three quarter sections previously mentioned, payin
g $1,000 for it. Its chief improvement was a log cabin, and that old b
uilding is still standing there. Michael Barner during the following y
ears became one of Summer County's most valued citizens. At the time o
f his death he owned 960 acres of land, and had devoted it to genera
l farming and the raising of cattle and hogs. He was naturally a leade
in the community, and was greatly admired for his straight-forward
, honest, God-fearing virtues and his devotion to his family. Michae
l Barner was born in PA and married Martha Ann Moan, a native of OH. M
ichael had been left an orphan at the age of nine years, and up to fif
teen made his home with an older brother. Despite early handicaps he w
as in no way deficient in energy and ambition to make the most of hi
s opportunities, and on leaving home he went out to Illinois and afte
working hard for several years he bought eighty acres in the heavy w
oods not far from Springfield, Sangamon County. He paid $10 an acre fo
this land. The timber he removed by cutting into cord wood and selli
g it, and he also grubbed up the stumps and gradually got his land cl
eared for cultivation. He was an indefatigable worker, and by sheer de
termination won a substantial success. Though his school advantages ha
d been very meager, he acquired a good education by teaching himself
. When he married he had only $75 in capital, but he and his wife prov
ed excellent team mates and by much self denial in the early days mad
e a home and provided for their growing children. Michael Barner, real
izing what he had been denied in his youth, was more than eager to giv
e his children the best of educational equipment. In politics he wa
s a republican, but later became allied with the populist party, and a
ltogether was little of a politician, his only public serving being o
the school board. While living in Illinois he had been able to incre
ase his first farm by an addition of forty acres, and was prospering t
here, but it was his desire to expand and give his children a start wh
ich prompted him to trade his forty acres of Illinois land for 160 acr
es in Summer County.

The birthplace of Abraham Lincoln Barner was a log cabin on the littl
e farm in Sangamon Co, Illinois, where he first saw the light of day A
ugust 8, 1860. He was the third in a family of ten children, seven o
f whom are still living. He attended school in Illinois, and afterwar
d had the advantages of a log-cabin temple of learning in Summer Co, K
ansas, and for one year was in the high school at Oxford.

He lived at home and did his part in the work on the farm until his ma
iage on December 21, 1882, to Miss Laura A. Cox. Her parents came t
o Summer County in 1877. Mr. and Mrs. Barner are the parents of five c
hildren, one of whom died in infancy. Ray J. lives on his own farm; Fl
orence is the wife of F. W. Scott, a farmer; Ethel is Mrs. Roy Carrout
hers of Sumner County; and Bert lives on the home farm.

When Mr. Barner was twenty-one years of age his father gave him a tea
m of horses and allowed him his board free for one year. That was hi
s start in life. He rented one of his father's farms, and though he wa
s thus fairly well capitalized he had by no means an easy time of it f
or the first fifteen years. He encountered successions of droughts, ot
her plagues incidental to Kansas farming in the early days, and it wa
s only by the closest kind of co-operation between himself and his fai
thful wife and by going without the luxuries that he finally arrived a
t a comfortable degree of material prosperity. Eventually he bought 12
0 acres, but in 1893 sold it and raced into Oklahoma at the opening o
f the Cherokee strip in the fall of that year. He did not locate in Ok
lahoma, and returning to Kansas paid $5,000 for 160 acres of land. The
e he began his farming career in earnest, and gradually his prosperit
y enabled him to make other purchases until his ownership now extend
s over 800 acres of the fertile lands of Summer County. This land is h
ighly developed and improved, and he has done much as a stock raiser
, keeping both horses and cattle. His favorite brand of cattle is th
e Short-Horn.

It was only recently, in 19l6, that Mr. Barner retired from the farm a
d moved to his town house in Belle Plaine. He is president of the Cit
izens State Bank of Belle Plaine, having held that office since 1908
. This is now the largest bank in the city. He was one of the organize
s of the Mutual Farmers Elevator at Palestine being president of th
e company there, and has given his time and resources liberally for th
e promotion of every laudable undertaking in his community. He is a me
mber and president of the Fraternal Aid Society, and has served as cle
k of Palestine Twp and four years as county commissioner. In politic
s he is a democrat. He also owns some real estate in the cities of Wic
hita and Belle Plaine. Mrs. Barner is an active member of the Methodis
t Church and Sunday School.

JEREMIAH J. BARNER, one of the most
progressive lumbermen and farmers of Green
township, Clinton Co, was born there on
May 1, 1838, a son of Henry Barner, a native of
Schuylkili Co, Pennsylvania.

John Barner, the grandfather, was also born
in Schuylkill Co, and was of German descent.
He was an agriculturist, and on leaving his native
county came to what is now Clinton county (then
Centre), and in Green township purchased a tract
of 400 acres, which he improved and cultivated
throughout the remainder of his life. In connection
with farming he also engaged in lumbering.
He was a man well known and highly respected.
Retiring one night in the best of health, he was
found dead in bed the next morning, being shot
during the night by some unknown assassin, who
was never found or brought to justice for the terrible
crime. His wife was one of the best of
women, very strong, being able to carry three
bushels of wheat, and at the time her youngest
child was married she was still able to ride on
horseback over the mountains to visit her children.
In the family were twenty-two children,
one of whom were twins, but only the names of
the following are known: David, George, Henry,
Benjamin, John, Daniel, Adam, Samuel, Christopher,
Herman, Lyddie, Mary, Fanny, Elizabeth
and Catharine.

Henry Barner, our subject’s father, received
a fair education in both the German and English
languages. He accompanied his parents on their
emoval to Clinton Co, where he grew to
manhood on the home farm, and on starting out
in life for himself engaged in agricultural pursuits
in Sugar Valley, Green township, where in 1840
he bought 300 acres of timber land, Upon his
place he erected a sawmill, and converted the
timber into marketable lumber, and cleared 150
acres of his land, which he placed under cultivation
and improved with good buildings, including
a fine residence. He also conducted a hotel or
tavern for five years on his farm in Green township,
and in his undertakings met with a fair degree
of success. He was a stanch supporter of
the Democracy, and was an elder in the Lutheran
Church. His upright, honorable course in life
gained for him the confidence and esteem of all
with whom he came in contact, either in his business
or social relations.

In Green township, Clinton Co, Henry
Barner was united in marriage with Miss Catharine
Kurn, who was born in Logan township, a
daughter of John Kurn, a native of Germany, and
a farmer by occupation. The following children
were born to them; John, a resident of Green
township; Israel, who died in 1892; Emanuel, of
Nittany Valley, Penn., Sarah, widow of David
Miller; Jacob B., Jeremiah J., Rebecca, wife of
David Shryer; Daniel, of Green township; Helen,
wife of Samuel Engle; Catharine, wife of John
Douty; Henry, who died when young; George,
of Penn’s Valley; and one who died in infancy.
The father departed this life in 1872, the mother
In 1893, and both were laid to rest in Mount
Union cemetery, Green township.

Jeremiah J. Barner obtained a limited education
in the public schools of Green township, but
his business training was not so meagre, and he
had so thorough a knowledge of the milling business
that at the early age of twelve years he was
given charge of a circular saw for the lumber
firm of Voras & Caldwell in the eastern part of
Green township, remaining with them for three
years. For the same length of time he was a
sawyer for Hoover & Price, and. the next three
years were spent in the sawmill of Haffey & Co.
He was then a partner in the manufacture of
shingles in the Engle sawmill, but two years
later he accepted the position of head sawyer in
a mill at Williamsport, where he remained three
years, and spent the following eight years in a
mill on Little Pine creek, after which he traveled
for a time through the western States, and in the
Rocky Mountains as far as Colorado. He then
accepted a position in a sawmill in Jackson Co,
MO., but as the climate did not agree with his
health, he resigned at the end of two months and
eturned hone. After working in a sawmill in
Brush Valley, Centre Co, for a year and a
half he came to Green township, Clinton Co,
in 1885, and entered into partnership with
the Engle brothers in the manufacture of lumber,
since doing business under the firm style of Engle,
Barner & Engle. It is one of the most reliable
companies of the kind in the Co, and is
meeting with a well-deserved success. Mr.
Barner is also interested in farming, having a
valuable place of sixty-five acres, whose well-tilled
fields and neat and thrifty appearance testify
to the skill and ability of the owner as an
agriculturist.

During the dark days of the Civil war, Mr.
Barner laid aside all personal interest, and at
Lock Haven, on August IO, 1861. enlisted in
Company B,11th P. V. I. under Capt. Shanks
and Col. P. D. Collier. On being mustered in
at Harrisburg, the regiment was assigned to the
Army of the Potomac, and with his command
our subject participated in the battles of Falling
Water, White Plains, Thompson Gap, Cedar
Mountain and Gettysburg. After the last named
engagements he, with three comrades, bought
some milk to drink, and the others died from the
poison which it contained, while he himself
thereby rendered unlit for duty for almost a
year, during which time he was confined in six
different hospitals in Washington, and suffered
untold agonies. As soon as he was able to be
moved he was discharged in May, 1864, at Washington,
and returned home.

At Lock Haven, Mr. Barner was married to
Miss Elizabeth Engle, a native of Green township,
Clinton Co, and a daughter of John
Engle, a lumberman. Her brother Jacob is now
a partner of our subject. Five children grace
this union : Franklin is engaged in milling; Mc-
Clellan is postmaster and a sawyer at Carroll,
Green township; Clara is the wife of Cyrus Bixler.
Of Buffalo Valley, Union Co., Penn. ; Lawrence
was educated in the Musical College of
Freeburg, and is now engaged in teaching music;
and Grant is at home.

Fraternally, Mr. Barner is an honored member
of George E. Myers Post No. 379, G. A. R.,
and Sugar Valley Lodge, I. 0. 0. F., both of
Loganton, while politically he has been a pronounced
Republican since the war. For five
years he has served as school director, and he
has always taken an active interest in those measures
calculated to promote the general welfare
along various lines. As a citizen he is highly respected,
enjoys the confidence of his neighbors,
and is regarded as a man of excellent business
judgment.

Died after lingering a year following a tree falling on his back. Daniel Barner was born on Sunday, 28 April 1844 at Carroll, Greene Township, Clinton County, Pennsylvania. The Veteran Democrat dies from a
Paralystic Stroke

Absalom Barner, of Susquehanna Twp,
One of the Best known, and most prominent citizens of Juniata Co, die
d on Monday at the age of 64 years. The funeral will not take [place
] until Friday, having been postponed to await the arrival of a brothe
from the West.
About a month ago Squire Barner was stricken with paralysis one entir
e side of his body being rendered completely helpless. He became unco
scious from the shock, and remained in that condition for about a wee
k. When he came to, he had lost the power of speech and never thereaf
ter regained it.
Mr. Barner had a number of years filled in the position of Justice o
f the Peace and was well known all over the county as Squire Barner
. He was one one of our staunchest and most active Democrats and no m
an in his section wielded more political influence than he.
Had it not been for the paralystic stroke he would this Spring have be
en a candidate for the position for Associate Judge.

844, son of George and Lydia (Lehr) Barner, natives of PA, and of Germ
an descent. His maternal grandfather , Peter Lehr, was a soldier in th
e War of 1812, and his paternal grandfather, Henry Barner, was a farme
. George Barner was a carpenter in early life, and in later life he w
as justice of the peace in Juniata Co, Penn., in which capacity he ser
ved for thirty years. He was a prominent and influential citizen. Of h
is nine children, John L. is the youngest. Our subject was reared in J
uniata Co, Penn, and attended the common school. At the age of twenty-
three years he came to Shippensburg, this Co, and engaged as clerk i
the dry goods store of George H. Stewart, where he remained for near
ly two years, when Mr. Stewart sold the store. Mr. Barner then accepte
d a clerkship in the Cumberland Valley freight office of J. B. Hur
s & Co, remaining with them nearly two years: was then appointed freig
ht and ticket agent for the Cunberland Valley Railroad Company , whic
h position he filled until August, 1881, since which time he has bee
engaged in settling the estate of Ira Long (deceased), and also doin
g business for his father-in-law, C. Long, a wealthy citizen of Shippe
sburg. Mr Barner was married in 1871, to Mary Ella, daughter of Chris
tian and Hannah Ellen (Atkinson) Long, and to them was born, October 6
, 1878, one son -- George Stewart, named in honor of our subject's fir
st employer in Shippensburg. Mr. and Mrs. Barner are members of the Ge
man Reformed Church. He has served four years as justice of the peac
e in Shippensburg. In politics he is a Democrat.
