Benjamin M. Bierly
Benjamin M. Bierly, 78, of 422 Oak St., Jersey Shore, died Wednesday
, Dec. 22, 2004 at the Williamsport Hospital.
He was born April 22, 1926 in Jersey Shore, a son of the late Harold a
d Barbara Johnson Bierly.
Ben was married in 1950 to the former Marion M. Larrison who survives.
He graduated from Jersey Shore High School, where he played basketbal
l for the 1943 championship team. He was also a graduate of Dickinso
College in Williamsport, now Lycoming College.
He was a World War II U.S. Army Air Force veteran.
He directed and played saxophone in a band and orchestra that played a
t clubs locally.
Early in his life, he worked for Larrison-Bierly Recapping in Jersey S
hore. He was a conductor for the N.Y. Central, Penn Central and ConRai
l Railroads, retiring in 1988 after 35 years.
He was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church, where he was active an
d at one time, conducted the boys choir. Ben was known for his master
y of intricate inlaid wood pictures and for his artistic ability. man
y of his paintings are displayed locally, including at Santinos Restau
ant.
Ben was an avid bow hunter. Above all, he was a very kind, considerat
e and loving family man.
Surviving besides his wife, are a daughter, Rebecca (Rich) Buttorff o
f Jersey Shore; a son, Michael of Hanover; five grandchildren, Sumer
, Misti and Tyson Buttorff and Taylor and Ashley Bierly and two brothe
s, Bill Bierly and Harold Bierly, both of Jersey Shore.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, April Louise.
A celebration of Ben’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Grac
e Lutheran Church, with his pastor, Rev. Ralph Heagy, officiating. Bur
ial will be in Jersey Shore Cemetery. In keeping with Ben’s wishes, th
ere will be no public visitation. His family suggests memorial contrib
utions be made to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, 1440 W. Washingto
Blvd., Chicago, Ill. 60607.
