Jack H. Karstetter, 67, of 330 Lehman Lane, Jersey Shore, died Tuesda
y morning, January 13, 2009 in the Williamsport Hospital.
Born October 31, 1941 in Rauchtown, he was the son of Paul Karstette
and the former Martha Bower.
Jack is survived by his companion of 42 years Mary E. Lamey.
He was employed by J.P Webb Construction and was a member of the Casta
ea Fire Co. and the Loyal Order of Moose of South Williamsport.
Jack enjoyed hunting and playing pool.
Surviving Jack are a daughter; one granddaughter; one grandson; and on
e great-grandson. Also surviving are two brothers, Lewis H. Karstette
and Kenneth W. Karstetter, both of Jersey Shore; one sister Connie L
. Brague of Hughesville; four nieces and four nephews.
Funeral services will be held Friday, January 16, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. i
the Frederick B. Welker Funeral Home, 125 N. Main St., Jersey Shore
. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday evening in the funeral ho

Marguerite I. Powers, 84, of Avis, residing in Hendersonville, Tenn.
, for the past five years with her son, Chester W. Powers, his wife, V
icki and granddaughter, Alexandria, was called to rest by her Heavenl
y Father on Saturday, March 4.
Known to many as “Aunt Peg,” she was born on April 20, 1921 in Rauchto
wn, a daughter of the late William E. and Vera M. Bailey Welshans of A
vis.
She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Avis.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Chester L. Powers of Avis i
March of 1999.
Mrs. Powers worked for Bobbie Brooks of Jersey Shore and Lock Haven an
d Woolrich Woolen Mills of Woolrich for a total of 28 years.
She enjoyed caring for and playing with her granddaughter, Alex.
Surviving are one son, Chet and his wife, Vicki, and granddaughter, Al
exandria Bailey Powers, all of Hendersonville, Tenn.; five sisters, Es
ther Kephart of Avis, Maxine Charles of Jersey Shore, Pauline Reever o
f York, Helen Shemory of Waterville and Beverly Rhinehart of Avis; an
d one brother, Robert Welshans of Hudson, Fla.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Joseph Welshans of Jersey Sh
ore.

Esther M. Kephart of Avis passed away peacefully at the Jersey Shore H
ospital Emergency Room on Friday, Nov. 30, 2007.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Carl W. Kephar
t Sr., on Nov. 6, 2000. They were united in marriage June 10, 1940 i
Winchester, Va.
Esther was born May 15, 1922 in Rauchtown, the daughter of William Wel
shans and the former Vera Bailey.
She moved with her family to Avis when she was 11 years of age, and gr
aduated from the Avis High School.
During her adult years, Esther worked at the Sylvania Plant and Pipe
Aircraft in Lock Haven. She also worked as a caseworker for the Penn
a. Department of Welfare for several years. In 1942, Ester and Carl fo
unded the Susquehanna Transit Co, in which Esther remained an active a
d integral officer until she became ill in 2005.
Esther was also a well-known figure in Clinton County Democratic organ
izations. For many years she was an active member of the Clinton Count
y Women’s Democratic Club and the Lady Bird Johnson Club of Renovo. Sh
e served as Democratic Committeewoman from Avis Boro and was the Clint
on County Democratic Chairman for several years.
Esther was a devoted member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Avis, wh
ere she was involved in many church activities, as well as serving o
the church council.
Esther loved spending time with her family, her grandchildren, and he
great granddaughter. Even in her later years, Esther remained vibran
t and enjoyed travel. She loved her community and visiting with her fr
iends. Esther was a generous and loving lady who will be greatly misse
d by her family and friends.
Surviving is a son, Carl W. (Christy) Kephart Jr. of Lock Haven; a dau
ghter, Tana M. Ford of Lock Haven; her grandchildren, Cam and Rachae
l Kephart, Taryn Ford Pavlik, Christopher and Mattison Ford; and a gre
at granddaughter, Hailey. Also surviving is a brother, Robert Welshan
s of Hanson, Fla.; four sisters, Maxine Charles of Jersey Shore, Pauli
e Reever of York, Helen Shemory of Waterville, and Beverly Rhinehar
t of Lock Haven.
A brother, Joseph Welshans, and a sister, Marguerite Powers, precede
d Esther in death.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, Dec. 5, at 10:30 a.m. in the Frede
ick B. Welker Funeral Home, 125 N. Main St., Jersey Shore. Friends ma

Merril S. Welshans, 86, of 8246 State Route 44 Highway, died Tuesday
, June 28, 2011 at his home. Born Aug. 30, 1924, in Rauchtown, he wa
s the son of Franklin Welshans and the former Ida Gamble.
Merril is survived by his wife, the former Mary Ann Wagner, they wer
e united in marriage March 7, 1957. He was retired from Piper Aircraf
t and was a member of the St. James Lutheran Church. Merril loved hunt
ing, fishing, gardening and was an avid Phillies and Eagles fan.
During World War II, Merril honorably served his country in the U.S. A
ir Force from Dec. 21, 1945 until April 24, 1947.
Also surviving is a son, Gerald M. (Donna J.) Wagner of Oval; one daug
hter, Debra J. (David) Johnson of Elimsport; two grandchildren and on
e great-granddaughter; five brothers, Richard Welshans of Jersey Shore

Richard K. Welshans, 86, of Jersey Shore, passed away Friday, May 2, 2
014, at The Gatehouse.
Born June 25, 1927, in Rauchtown, he was the son to the late Frank an
d Ida (Gamble) Welshans. He was preceded in death by his loving wife
, Readell F. (Sorgen) Welshans, on May 13, 2012; great-grandson, Jona
h Weidler; and six siblings, Merrill, Larry, Bill, and Bud Welshans, N
ancy Shadle, and Jane Buttorff.
Richard honorably served our country in the U.S. Navy. He served in ac
tive service from March 13, 1945 to Aug. 11, 1946, and was honored wit
h the European Theater Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon and the Victor
y Medal. Richard was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, and retire
d from Pullman Power after many years of service.
Surviving are three daughters, Janice I. (Ken) Karstetter, Connie L. W
elshans, and Pamela J. (Frank) Morse, all of Jersey Shore; a son, Ji
m R. (Linda) Welshans, of Jersey Shore; ten grandchildren, Zachary (Ja

Larry L. Welshans Sr., age 79, a resident of Oak Ridge Personal Care Home died June 6, 2009 at the Gatehouse Hospice after an extended illness.
He had formerly resided in the Lock Haven area. Mr. Welshans was born in Rauchtown on June 9, 1929 and was a son of the late Frank H. and Ida Gamble Welshans.
Larry was married to the late Jean Dickey Welshans who preceded him in death on Oct. 17, 1988. They had been married for 34 years.
Mr. Welshans was a veteran of the Korean War, serving with the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953. He then went to work for Piper Aircraft while seving as a deputy wildlife conservation officer. He retired from Pipe Aircraft after 17 years of service in 1971 and retired from the Pa. Game Commission in 1989.
In 1983 he received the employee of the year award from the Game Commission.
He enjoyed American history, wildlife and the outdoors.
Larry had been a member of the St. James Lutheran Church of Rauchtown.
Survivors include three sons, Larry and his wife Jane Welshans Jr., of Lewistown, Kenneth Welshans of Rauchtown, and Gregory and his wife Tammy Welshans of Rauchtown; three daughters, Susan and her husband William Benton of Huntingdon, Mona and her husband David Calhoun of McElhattan and Peggy and her husband Alton Lyons of Atoka, OK.
Also surviving are his siblings, Merril Welshans, Richard Welshans, his twin brother, Barry Welshans, Jane Buttorff, Paul Welshans, Lewis Welshans, Mavis Rauch, Stanley Welshans, Sharon Lamey and Bud Welshans; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, E. Williams Welshans, and a sister, Nancy Shadle.
Funeral services for Larry L. Welshans Sr. will be held on Wednesday, June 10, 2009, at 10 a.m. in the Yost-Gedon Funeral Home, 121 W. Mai St., Lock Haven.
Officiating will be Pastor Thomas C. Jones of the Avis United Methodist Church. Interment will be in the Jersey Shore Cemetery.
Family and friends will be received in the funeral home Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Barry L. Welshans Sr., 87, of Loganton, passed away Thursday, Jan. 26
, 2017, at the Williamsport Regional Medical Center.
Born on June 9, 1929, in Rauchtown, he was the son of the late Frank a
d Ida Gamble Welshans.
Barry was a Veteran of the U.S. Army, having served from 1951 until 19
53.
On Sept. 13, 1970, he married the love of his life, Effie R. Richard
s Welshans, who preceded him in death.
In his early years, he worked for Renningers Lumber Company. He then w
as employed by Piper Aircraft for 29 years before retiring in 1984.
Barry enjoyed hunting, fishing, farming and cheering on the Philadelph
ia Eagles and Phillies. He especially cherished the time he spent wit
h his family.
Surviving is a son and daughter-in-law, Barry L. and Doreen Welshans J
., of Loganton; two stepsons, Norman (Peg) Johnson, of Mackeyville an
d Dale Johnson, of McElhattan; four siblings, Luke Welshans, of Raucht

Lewis F. Welshans, 86, of Jersey Shore, passed away Friday, Nov. 2, 20
18 at the Williamsport Home.
Born Oct. 15, 1932 in Nippenose Valley, he was the son to the late Fra
k Welshans and the late Ida E. Gamble. In addition to his parents, h
e was preceded in death by his wife, the former Mary F. Shaffer, and t
en siblings. Lewis was a member of St. James Lutheran Church. He retir
ed from Piper Aircraft and the Jersey Shore Area School District. He a
lso was a self employed farmer.
Surviving are two sisters, Mavis Rauch of Bastress and Sharon Lamey o
f Rauchtown, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, at Frederick B
. Welker Funeral Home, 125 N. Main St., Jersey Shore. Friends may cal
l from 9 a.m. Thursday until the time of services at Welker Funeral Ho
me. Pastor Joe Hopkins will officiate.
He will be laid to rest next to his wife in the Fairview Cemetery in L
oganton.

Stanley J. Welshans Sr., 79, of Oval, passed away Saturday, Sept. 30
, 2017 at UPMC Williamsport.
Born March 7, 1938 in Rauchtown, he was a son to the late Frank H. an
d Ida E. (Gamble) Welshans.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, N
ancy L. Shadle and Beverly Jane Buttorff; and seven brothers, E. Willi
am, Buddy E., Merril S., Larry L. Sr., Richard K., Paul L., and Barr
y L. Sr. Welshans.
Stanley honorably served his country in the United States Army. Throug
hout his life, Stanley worked for the Forestry Department, Piper Aircr
aft, and Mardens.
He enjoyed being outdoors and doing yard work, but his greatest love w
as spending time with his family.
Surviving are his loving wife of 21 years, the former Edna R. Myers; t
hree children, Stanley Jr. (Lyssa) Welshans, of Edgewood, Texas, and S
herrie (Jeffrey) Brungard, of Loganton, and Sandra (Richard) Simon, o
f McElhattan; stepchildren, Michelle (John) Lupole, Margaret Sylvani
o (Bobby Sweeley), William (Dawn) Sylvanio, and Leif Fredrikson, all o

Charles Newton Welshans, 84, of Jersey Shore, passed on to our Lord Tu
esday, Feb. 4, 2014 at the Williamsport Home.
He was born Sept. 19, 1929 in Allenwood, the son of Byron S. and Oliv
e Mae (Miller) Welshans.
Charles was a U. S. Army veteran.
He was a member of the St. James Lutheran Church.
Charles retired from the Jersey Shore Steel.
He enjoyed traveling, gardening, candle making, doing pu?les and feedi
g his birds.
He is survived by nine children, Charles H. (Candy) Welshans, Steven L
. Welshans, Kay L. (Tony) Heggenstaller, Lori L. Guthrie, John P. (All
ison) Welshans, Diane L. (Charles) Apker, Judy A. Teeter, Byron Welsha
s, Lee E. (Stephanie) Welshans; 24 grandchildren, 35 great grandchild
en; brothers, Ned Welshans of Fla., Jack Welshans, Dan Welshans bot
